Wall Street Doesn't Fix My Price
It's a lot of fun to do business when you've got the right policy and the
best quality at the lowest price.
You remember last September, 1 anticipated a drop in Fur dropped my
price swallowed my loss and sold at cost, and every link in this
chain was strained to handle the crowds.
At that time, Hatter's Fur was quoted at $13.50 a pound. You can buy
it now for $3.75 a pound. Before the War it cost $1.50 a pound, and
I don't blame the Rabbits for the jump from $1.50 to $13.50. I think
it was Wall Street's influence on the Fur Market.
But Wall Street doesn't run my business, or make my hats. While Wall
Street was busy manufacturing rumors, I was busy manufacturing hats.
While Wall Street was full of gloom, my stores were full of Happiness
and Hats. When I took the lid off the price, the sales jumped up.
And the same thing happened in Straw hats. The break in the price
of Rabbit Fur in Australia last Fall was followed by a slump in the
straw braid market in Japan this Spring.
When I storied to make straw hats for this season, the best quality of
straw braid was selling at $1.10, and a number of manufacturers bought
at that price. I knew the market would break, and waited until it
dropped to 40c, and then jumped in and bought more as it went lower.
So don't blame the retailers around town who are charging all kinds
of prices for the Quality that I am selling at $2.85. They're not
-ffC fliAv'rp simnlv victims of carlv buvintr. Thev bouerht at the
B top. I bought at the bottom. And my good fortune is yours.
