Something of the medieval spirit ot
"mcrrle England," In its youthful rest,
and jocundity, marked tho revival of
"The Tempest," the rnroly given "con
ceited and pleasant comedio" of Shakes
pearc, last night. Tho Phllomnthean
Society of the Unlvomity of Pennsyl
vania wisely elected to produce tho
play out of doors and an appropriate
woodland setting was chosen in the
picturesque Botanical Gardens, beyond
the dormitories, which helped out tin
Elizabethan effect with their some
what modified Tudor collegiate archi
tecture. The Botanical Gardens are just now
'rich In their spring loveliness and fur
nished a pictorial and fitdne back
ground for the imaginative legend 6f
the playwright's dramatic swan -song.
Absence of the "drops" and "proper
ties" of the conventional theatre forced
the audience into' linnsinatlve partici
pation In the progress of tho plav, Just
us audiences contemporary with Shakes
peare were compelled to exercise their
imaginations in n way mat nas oisap
pcared with the advent of the scene
t.alutcr, the stage electrician and the
carnentcr nnd the evolution of the tbea
tro toward literalism In reproducing
locales.
The "ship scene," which has been
usually omitted In the infrequent re
vivals of tho piece, was restored In the
version nctcd. Tho story of the ban
Iblicd Duke Prospero. with his necro
mantic art nt ready command and his
sane, tolerant phllosophj of life, of his
daughter Miranda's much-crossejl ro
mance with Ferdinand and of the two
eplrlts, the good Ariel and the evil Call
ban, proved very delightful In its many
fancies nnd Its ever-present poetry
The cast, whose efforts were praise
worthy. Included Marlon Masland as
Miranda, Frank Baxter as Prospero,
William Stewnrt as Ferdinand, Edward
Hibernian as Antonio, Mnrgarct Schell
ns Ceres. Leslie ICclley as Ariel and
Leo Blank as Caliban.
Performances will be given every
night this week, with spcclnl matinees

Thrills, intermingled with artistic ef
fects, made the riding offered by May
Wirth, her brother 1'hllj and other
members of the family one of the big
hits at the bill. .
Philadelphia Jim and Marian liar
kins started business in the laugh lino
early. Jim's brand of confidential com
edy, a la Big Bill Wilson, caught on
and held those present. Incidentally.
Jim showed that ho Is capable of doing
a still better act nnd may launch forth
with one next season.
Joe Uarcy, tbe singing songwriter,
won emphatic approval with some of
the latest melodies. He has the knack
of making tho audience acquainted with
every line of his songs,
Geonrin Camnbell. assisted by Rob
ert Buchanan, scored the artistic hit of
the bill in a southern musical skit,
called "Gone Are the Days." This act,
offered in attractive southern settings,
was rewarded with four "curtains."
Daly nnd Berlew offered whirlwind
dances with good results. Bernard and
Towncs pleased in a musical skit.
Globo Octavia Hnndworth nnd Co.
gave "Salvation Sue," a timely sketch,
full of good situations nnd sparkling
lines. Itule and O'Brien won approval
in songs of the day. Among the mnny
good nets were Twentieth Century He
view, the Ilunnway Four and the Bell
ventriloquists
Cross Keys Latest fads of the day
are introduced In the "Tip Top Merry
mnkcrs." This tabloid affords oppor
tunity to present unique dances. A solid
hit was lauded by Cliff Nazarre and Co.
In songs nnd dances. Bert Wheeler and
Co. in a skit nnd other nets also
pleased.
Grand Many really new ideas are
presented by "Honey Boys' Minstrels."
an aggregation which contains several
good singers. The net is hnndsomely
staged and awny from the ordinary run
of minstrels. Archer nnd Bedford suc
ceeded in keeping laughs rolling nnd
other entertaining nets were presented.
Broadway Joseph K. Watson nnd
Willie Cohan in "Slltkin and Siatkln"
proved n merry headliner. The Thistle
Review, a' twentieth century vuriety
clnssic. was a good runner-up. Bennett
and Fletcher hnvc n musical playlet ot
merit. "Eastbound" was the feature
photoplay, which rounded out n good
bill.

position. Howe and Howe in songs nnd

thrilling stunts. Jackson and Taylor

"The Passion Flower" was the feature

Nixon Arthur Miller and company

Irving. The reason Is not far to seek.

of the meat of melodrama in It. lis situ
ations, albeit conventional, arc thentrl-
cnlly effective, there is opportunity for
picturesque settings, the utterances of
tho characters have a fine ring and a
high sound and there Is n senip of learn
ing history from Its passages. It's all
old-fashioned now, so surely does n cen
tury of time turn what was daring once
into what becomes outmoded.
The craftiness nnd cruelty of this
most baleful and detestable of medieval
monarchs are especially stressed In the
acting adaptation made from the Dela
vigne drama by II. C. Matthcus. Mr.
Mnntell gives a masterly impersonation
