There wns but one big upset In nil
the matches played jesterday on the
opening afternoon of the women's and
men's interclub lawn tennis leagues.
This was Hip defeat of Miss Anne II.
Tcwnpnd, enptain of the Mcrion Cricket
Club team, by Miss Phyllis II. WnMi.
nf the Pliilndelpliin Country Club. Thnt
wn the only victory won by the Coun
try Club from the Main Iine girls, and
it was rather remnrknble in view of the
fact thnt Mls Walsh is not the tegu
lar first singles player of the Country
Club team. Recently tlio Florida cham
pion wns hcaten by Mr.. Gilbert A.
llarvcy. but yesterday Mrs. Harvey wn
111. so Miss Wnlsli took her place-ns the
ranking plajer of the Bala team.
Miss Walsh has been placing con
sldernbly more than Mis Tounscnd.
who has not yet reached her real form.
Miss Townsend look t lie (if-t set nt
0-4, then, when on the verge of vic
tory in the seeord set. the Mcrion girl
faltered and Miss Walsh came through,
8-0. In the third set MIsn Townsend
wn completely off her game and Mis-s
Wnlsli won as she p'eased. (i-t.
The Mcrion team was well balanced
and most of the players showed much
bitter form tlmn they did at this time
last season. MK Uebornlt Senl was
bnck in tennis uniform. She trimmed
Miis Warriner with the loss of only one
game, so that in n manner of spenking
one might sny that Mls Warriner wns
a "subdeb."
Mlhs Thaer Absent
Miss Molly Thajer. one of the best
players in the Philadelphia district, was
not In tlio line-up of tlio Philadelphia
Cricket Club team. However, the cap
taincy and first singles portion is well
taken care of by Mrs. M. B. IltifT, who
yesterday won her match from Mrs.
W. P. Newhnll, of Oonnantown, in
straight sets. 0-4, 0-H. The Cricket
Club made n clean sweep of their
matches nnd not one of them went the
limit of three set and only one set went
to deuce thnt was the first in the match
between Miss Be3-y Ferguson and Mrs.
D. B. Craee.
Huntingdon Valley hod a good day,
losing only one match to Belfieid. The
best match was the first singles event,
in which .Miss Helen Sewell defeated
Mr. Robert Hrrold. captain of the
Belfieid team. 0-.'. 7-fi. Miss Uiegel
won Belfield's only match from Miss
Downing, tl-4. U-tl. ft -2.
Merlon Shows Strength )
Merlon's men's team showed ai much
strength n the women. They made a
grand slam, winning nil six matches
from Overbrook. The Merlon team
consisted of Ted Edwards. Rowland1
Evans, Stanley Rogers, Henry Endicott
Wister and Bell nnd T. and E. Thnjer
As expected. Cynwyd had no trouble
in beating Belfieid, although the hitter
won u match in doubles when I. S,
Crnvis nnd (Jeoige Powell fell before
Smith nnd Wllletts. Thnt mntcli went
three sets and the scores were 0-3,
4-0. 0-3.
