BANKING BUSINESS IS SEEN
AS NEW FIELD FOR WOMEN
Jfcllcslcy Graduate, in Statistics Department of Philadelphia
Bank, Worked Way From Typist
The bankingX business Is opening a
new field of constructive work for the
college woman, according to Miss Helen
D. Hnrblcon, n Wellcsloy gradunte who
In three yenrs has worked her way from
typist to an important position' In the
statistics department of n Philadelphia
bank.. ,
"Backing Is opening great, oppor
tunities for women today," sfie, said.
"The broader her education the better
MTvIoe she enn rendor. Of course, she
should have the .fundamentals of eco
nomics In order to meet and understand
woild -problems. She should have had
training In psychology In order to un
derstand and know how to deal with
people. Sho must bo content to do do
tall work. She cannot pick out big
thlngH to do nil the time, nnd she can
nK. afford to think her job Is not big
enough for her.
"During the war. the small Investor
learned how to save through buying
Liberty Bonds. Today the banks hare
many of these small Invrstors coming
to them for advice and help. A woman
can be very helpful as an adviecr if she
Is sufficiently trained In banking. In
many ways she can prove herself more
competent than a man to gain and give
sympathetic undemanding. There are
many women clients who would prefer
to tell their flnnncinl difficulties to other
women and get advice from another
Nvoman. I
"1 see no reason why Ta woman should
not hold n good position In almost any
department of n bank, provided, of
course, that she has the training, .
"Banking is one of the professions in
which women have only recently demon
strated their ability to hold positions
of responsibility and tniBt. Of course,
for innnv years bnnking Institutions
have employed women as telephone oper
ators und stenographers, but it was only
the constant depletion of the working
force by the call to service during the
war that gave women an entrance Into
all departments of the modern bank or
trust company.
"The work has all sorts of possibili
ties. Tt is constructive. It gives women
the chnnce to really be of service In a
now field."

THE DAILY NOVELETTE
They Never Thought
By MAIIION A. LEE
"J. 0. Fleming & Co. have cut the
pricen again."
"What I Again?" Jack Below jumped
out of his chair and tijok an angry turn
through the office. "They must be
mad!"
"It'a the new manager; he's trying a
new stunt."
"Darn fool, that's what he is, Why,
Jos, they'll bankrupt us If this keeps
us. We can't sell at such prices."
"Oucss that's what he'a after to
have one competitor less," grunted Jo
seph Gray gloomily.
"Call Miss Small. I'm going to write
them another letter. This thing has
got to stop. Why, mnn nllvc. tbev'll
ruin their own business, too. Oh. Miss
Small: Fleming & Co., city. Gentle
men Referring to your recent reduc
tion In the prices of Japanese lilies nnd
Holland tulips, we wish to say that
you are deliberately ruining tho entire
bulb trade. There is absolutely no
profit left If we nre to compete with
Mich price-cutting. Your now mana
ger may be an energetic, live-wire
man, but ho has no brains when it
comes to the bulb business," etc.
Throe days later Joe came In. "Hear
from 'Fleming & Co.? I can't land an
order at our prices every florist is or
dering from Fleming & Co." He sank
dejectedly into a chair.
Jack's face looked like a thunder
cloud. "Yes, I got an answer today.
They wish to inform me that their now
manager is contemplating another cut."
"I'd like to wring his neck." was
all Joe commented. ,
"That's nothing to what I'd do n
him. IiOok here,'' pointing to a trade
journal, "hero It says Fleming & Co. 'a
new manager is off for 11 vncarion at
the new Hot Springs hotel and we
watching our business go to smash."
"Jack!" Joe's voice foretold an in
spiration, "you've got to go to that Hot
Springs hotel and scrape on acquaint
once with that fellow nnd talk to him.'
Now listen. We've finished trying to
bulldoze him ; we've got to use other
tactics. First of all, apologize for vour
letters. Have n heart-to-heart talk
with hirn, pcrsnade lHm, see? Yon
simply got Xo. .Tack; it's our only
chnnce: and for heaven's s-ake get an

you look that sour."
Jack went very reluctantly. Joe In the

After two weeks of Bitch correspond

had nut scut his partner down to Hot

Jack, beaming, was at the station to

"Joe, old chap," he said, and wrung
his hand as though he hnd not seen him
in a j ear or more. "I'm bursting with

jou'll forgive me when you hear all
about It." Joe pricked up his ears.
"Joe," his vole 'quivered, "I've mot

I did not know such a girl existed, tho

"By golly, my patience Is at an cndl

When Joe cooled ofT he determined to
find thin Miss Ryers and explain things.
"Jack has confided In me," began
Joe, after 11 bit.
"Yes," interrupted Daisy sweetly,
"we're engaged."
Joe was a llttlo taken nbnek.
"1 must congratulate him," he mur
mured. "You see," bungled Joe. very much
embarrassed, and really not knowing
how to tell her. "yon see, Mlsn Uycrs,
T sent him down here to- find Fleming
& Co.'s manager and- "
"Oh." Interrupted Daisy joyously.
"here comes Jack!" and ran a icw I
steps to meet him. "I've been talking,
to your chum, Mr. Gray, Jack, and
he's just telling mo that you came
4own here to find Fleming & Co. 'a I
manager, nnd isn't It nice he found the
manager, Mr. Gray?"
"But he didn't." said Joe quickly.
"Oh, yes he did," contradicted pretty
Daisy, smiling. ''Only Jack doesn't I
know it. cither. I'm the manager of I
Fleming & Co."
I Ann ns for ail the silly price cut
ting, Jack and I will talk it over. I'm
) rather tired of managing, and maybe
1 we might merge the two companies.
1 Whnt do you think. Jack?" asked
1 Daisy softly.
