ALL POOL ISSUES

Weok's Events Presented Con-

ress on Constructive Side
Ner York, April "0. Tho outRtand-
' lug fcaturo of today's 6rief session In
the stock market was the renewed pool
activities In tho motor stocks and motor!
accessories, especially the shares of tho
tire companies. Prices In these two
croups wero marked up from one to over
five points with the most flagrant ma
nipulation witnessed for considerable
long time.
Movement of the general Jlst was
marked by tho Mine conflicting Irregu
larity manifested In tho preceding ses
sion. Another crack was made nt th
oil and steel shares at tho opening, but
the overwhelming strength and buoy
ancy of the motor, shares and their uc
ccdsorlcs quickly turned tho tide and be
fore the end of the first hour the Whole
nt hearin to climb. I3xccntinK the

tne mariiei mu nut puum- uim-u iimunnj,
although there wni n (drilling rebound
in tho oils and steels which had been
under pressure nt the opening.
The ovcreaijcrnesH of tho pools dis
played through the rnpld upturn In
prices Invited free proilt-Uklng in the
fast half hour of the trnding, which, in
turn, cut down n considerable part of
the earlier Improvement.
The week's cients and developments
mpplicd the same curious mixtmt of
good nnd bad. Despite tills conflicting
mrface influence, it was quite evident,
oven to nn inexperienced layman, of tho
market having renched a Juncture
wheicln the line of least resistance was
erifountercd in tho forward swings.
This would hardly warrant the impll
(ntinn of n mnjor forward movement
having started. It docs suggest thu
market, fundamentally, is getting in
good shape. Tho usunl preliminary
Kkirmlshes of renewed pool activities
was plninly In evidence not in ono
but in many quarters of tho list, but
men window dressing is common ex
perience In the npproncuing turn or nt
the turning point of tho tide of market
MllllCS,
It Is still a market under the com
plete domination of the professional ele
ment in consequence of' the continued
low ebb of outside inlcroet. With the
power of the constructive side nppav
entlv in ascendancy as tho week's de
velopments quite plainly demonstrated,
the bear party, with its long list of
victories, had obviously lost its- grip
on the market. At least such a conten
tion 'was suggested in tiio short-lived
reactions cm tho one hand nnd tho In
creasing recuperative power dlsplujcd
bj the entire list when- pressure re
laxed on the other Iiunrt.x
When n deeper nnnlysis is made of
t'le general situation there is much of
nn encouraging nature to bo found.
Many of these elements have not stiflt
i icntly cryMnllizod nR to become dis
cernible on the surface, yet indirectly
their Influence is nlrcndy felt mnrket
wise and finds reflection in the current
level of quotations. Confirmation of
such an argument is presented partly in
Hie average level of the twenty active
industrial stocks, which nt the moment
stands ocer 1" points above the low
water mark made in December nnd
within 11 points of the peak of Inst
jor. Tho rail", however, are only u
little over 2 points nbovo their bot
tom level of the year. From this there
would be the uaturn! inference of the
adverse side of the Industrial sldo of
the situation having passed. That this
is true, is corroborated in the recent
finressions of mam of the acknowl
edged cxpcit economists nnd members of.
I'reslilcnt h ciDinui wno nave necn mail
ing long-riiMnuce nnd close views of the
industrial situation. Secretary Hoo
'ii In a recent speech (-aid while our
industrial recovery may be slower than
nine expect, nothing can prevent the
piosperity of n coiintiv whero people
have enlightenment, v. I'll to work, wish
'o produce! ami wish to do right by their
neighbors. "I am convinced," he said,
"that we have fundamentally turned
the corner."

To the Investors the week's lending

The incident, however, served to bring
