Bilently, silently played their

For twenty years a third
party sat by and silently
lUUHUU Uli.
Then one of tho two players
failed to show up for the
first tune in twenty years.
After waiting a few minutes,
his partner said to the on
looker, "I Ruess he isn't com
ing today. Will you play
his men?" "Sorry," was
the answer, "but I don't
know the game."
He had followed every
moo for twenty years but
ho didn't know the game. He
had watched the drama of
king and castle for two de
cades without sensing n single
undercurrent of strategy,
speculating on a single mo
tne, or anticipating a single
coup.
Ho had displayed mfinito
patience in looking at the
amt but he couldn't bo
othered looking tifo it Ho

except its lirst symptom
curiosity.
Ho belonged to that listless
nrrny of pnssne observern
who clutter up the side lines
of business- men who look
without seeing, listen with
out hanng, do without
understanding.
Placed in nn oflico at a
bench - ho would remain
twenty years ignorant of his
neighbor's job, his superior's
pioblems, his own signifi
cance. When tho opportunity
for advancement came, he
would hao to say, "Sorry,
but I don't know tlio game."

How Much Do You
Know?
Abraham Lincoln and Dan
iel Webster read compara
tively few books. But they
read thoroughly.
Every book, eery story,
eicry newspaper offers a
wealth of information to the
reader who will pause long
enough to look up a word or
a liamo that is unfamiliar.
For instance, do you know
what u Uucksnck is? A per
nod A leptdoptcrist? A n en?
A croupier?
Could you locate Baden
Raden and Monaco on the
map?
Could you describe an Ascot
tie, or tell how it got its
name?
Do you know who Monte
zuma wns, or who wrote "La
Bohemef"
Could you define argot, Oc
cidental, coagulatnc or Pue
blo? Yet, in reading the April
Cosmopolitan you will run
across all of theso words. If
you skip them, the stones
will prove every bit ns inter
esting, but Lincoln and Web
ster would have looked them
up.
Just try for fun and aee
how many of these questions
i ou can answer. Then write
us about it, addressing your
letter to the Question Editor,
Cosmopolitan Magazine, Netv
York City.
