Ycsterday'ii concert of the Philadel
phia Orchestra was virtually mado
up of novelties, for. although almost all
the numbers have been heard here pre
viously, they nro by no means well
known. David IMspham was tho so
loist, and the great Philadelphia bari
tone, ono of the Quaker City's most
distinguished contributions to the mu
sical art, divided honora with Schocn
hcrg's symphonic poem, "Pollens nnd
MoHsnmic.'1 which -was rlrtulilly. If
not actually, new to a Philadelphia
audience.
Tho concert began with the ncelhoven
Symphony No. 4, which is so rarely
plajcd that in itself it constituted a
novelty. Had almost any composer but
Hcethovcn written thin symphony It
would bo considered one of his finest
works, but coming, ns it does, between
tho three Itasoumoffsky quartets, op.
50, ccrtnlnly among the greatest of
their form of music, and the violin con
certo, op. 01, tho king of all violin
compositions, the symphony docs not
measure up to the standard of the
masterpieces on cither sldo of it. How
ever, entirely omitting tho chronological
side, it is not tho equal of tho Third
symphony. Tho difference lies chiefly
In tho thematic mnlcrlar, for tho de
velopment section of tho Fourth leaves
nothing to be imagined. An Interesting
feature Is tho architecture of the scherzo
in which tho (IchIkii of tho areat scherzo
of tho Seventh symphony is shown for
the first tlmo. The work was finely
Interpreted and as beautifully played.
The orchestral novelty was tho
Schoenberg symphonic poem, in which
Mr. Stokowskl niny havo committed an
error in program making. The work
Is too long nnd too intricate to havo
anything but the lending place on a
program. Before playing the compo
sition Mr. Htokowskl made one of his
Interesting nnd characteristic addresses,
In which ho besought the hearers to
listen to tho composition with an open
mind nnd not to be disturbed by the
modern tendencies of the composer har
mouicnlly. But tho Srhoenberg symphonic poem
needed no plea In its bchiilf. It is true
that an understanding of the '"compo
sition would have been nldcd by n
program, for, based on tho Maeterlinck
text or the Debussy operatic setting,
It wns undeniably difficult to follow tho
story in the Schoenberg music. Hut
It Is one of the finest modern orchestral
compositions that has been given in
Philadelphia -for r long time. The dis
sonances arc frequently "rnw," but
they arc almost always the result.of the
pitiless pnrt wrltine in which Schoen
berg Indulges (In the I) minor qunrtct
and tho sextet for strings for example)
rather than In the exploitation of Inten
tionally discordant harmony. There
are many exquisitely beautiful parts
In the work nnd such breaking of tho
"rules" ns there nre. and tlicro nro
many, nre made for the effect and not
for the mere sake of breaking them.
Much more that space torblds could bo
suld about this remarkable work.
Mr. BIspham scored n deserved tri
umph in both of his nppeuranccH. In
tho Mozart arin ho showed a full, rich
tone combined with tho artistry that
ho always hnd. Tho Mnx Schillings
aettlne of tho "Witch's Song" was de
livered with u dramatic force which re
called the best of his famous Wncncrlnn
roles. One of the features of thfs
unique program was the contra-bass
obbllgato to tho Motart nras played by
Anton Torcllo. Mr. Torclfo ployed
the horribly difficult part without his
notes nnd brought a beauty of tone
and n facility of execution from the
Instrument which resembled tho cello.
It is doubtful If any other bass player
in the country, If not In tho world,
could hare performed the tcchnlcnl nnd
tonal feats which thin fine artist
achieved.

Youthful Violinist Appears In Con
cert In the Academy of Music
Sammy Krnmar, probably the young
est violinist in the United Htntes who
nppears in concert, gave n recital in tho
Academy of Music last evening to an
audience which was painfully small
when it was considered that he appeared
to n capacity house about a year ago.
His program was very ambitious whoa
the age of the soloist (eight -years) Is
taken into account. It consisted of a
sonata by Hcnalllc. the ninth concerto
of Do Bcrlot. the Gondollerla from the
third suite of ltles. a Hebrew nlr nnd
dance by himself. Brahms' Hungarian
Dance No. 5 and the gypsy dance of
Nachcz.
In the year that has elapsed between
his recitals here Sammy has made prog
ress in his left hand nnd bow technique,
in confidence nnd in stage presence. In
tbo finale of tho Do Bcrlot concerto his
memory went nstray for n moment, but
with a few notes of prompting by his
nccompanist. Miss Sllbcrtn, he resumed
tho mjio pnrt in n manner which would
have left nny unfamiliar with the con
certo in doubt as to whether or not
anything untoward had happened. 1 ho
rest of the program was played accu
rately from memory.
Tho child's chief fault Is lack of cor
rect intonation, but perfection in this
phaso of violin playing Is hardly to be
expected In a boy of his years who at
tempts such difficult numbers ns were
on the program last evening. He plnys
with n remarkable facility and excellent
musicianship for one so young nnd with
an enthusiasm which Is not often seen
In performers double his age. Never
theless, he is too young to nppcar in
public, for his own sake, especially. If
those In charge of the destinies of this
fitted boy nro wise they will withdraw
dm from the concert stage until such
time ns his talents havo been developed
under proper instruction.
ORCHESTRA IS HEARD
Women of Matinee Mualcale Appear
at Griffith Hall
The orchestra of the Mntlnco Musi
cnlc, nn organization of about thirty
five young women, under the competent
leadership of Mrs. Nina Prcttymcn
Howell, gave an excellent concert in
(irlflith Hall lat,t evening to nn audience
which more than comfortably filled the
auditorium. Tho orchestra was assisted
by Mies Vcrn MonkB, soprano, and
Lewis Jnmes Howell, baritone.
Mrs. Howell had apparently inspired
tho plajcra of tho orchestra with her
own enthusiasm, for they played with
a hnnoroiis tone of excellent quality and
with n spirit not often obtained from nn
nmnteur organization. The program se
lected was not nn easy one. but the
orchestra encompnssed Its difficulties.
If not easily, nt least without any dis
turbance of the musical thought of the
composer. It began with "Der Krcis
chuU" overture, and included, among
other numbers, a fino performance of
the prize song from "Die Mclstcr
slnger," two movements from Olnzou
nnlT's "The Seasons." tho dances from
"Henry VIII" nnd tho march from
"Sigurd .Torsnlfar."
Miss Monks, who, by tho wny. Is one
of the violinists of the orchestra, snug
with. good volco and style Protheroe'H
"Thri Pilot" and the beautiful "Ilitomn

whose art needs no comment to Phlln- ,
dclphin concert -goers, sang among his'
numbers Secchl's "Love Mo or Not" I
nnd "Mndamina" from "Don Giovan-

double encore.
