" "Bme JiT f wasss('"- Ralph Miller in Camp; Ftctcher May Leave flidncAville, Ha., March 12. Another inflclder has arrived at the' Phillies camp, but one, may have to leave for a week. Ralph Miller, whone home la in Ohio, came in last night. Italph lias been playing basketball three nights a week during the last winter. He Is about four pounds underweight, but expecta to pick up during the training season. Just after Miller arrived Art Fletcher, formerly of the Giants, shortstop and captain of the rhlllles, received a telegram stating that his brother, whose home was in St. Louis, had died. Fletcher may leave todny for n week jto attend, his brother's funeral. lant place. Dut there la a chance that some of the youngsters may come through. That is the only nope until other playera can be obtained. Yesterday, when two 1'hilly tenma plnyed, Keenan. David, Crandall and Singleton did the twirling. None ot them showed much, because the day was cooler than usual and they were not wllllnc to lake a chance on hurting their arms. Of the four. David showed to best advantage, mainly because he fins the easiest delivery and is able; to put something on the ball without a great deal of effort. Regulars Win The first team scored 0 runs to 1 for the Vans, but the contest wiik not a very epicy one. The field wan In poor coudltlon and the Yens' team was com posed almost exclusively of pitchers. Ilubbell made the only run against the varsity. The Vans' Infield waa com posed of Bmlth, Unamnn, Parkinson and Bettfl. The regulars had , WrlglitKtnne. Fletcher, ifawllnga and Jack Miller in the Infield. The catchers yesterday attracted the most Interest, and will continue to do so, for there la going to bo a real fight beforo pruning time comes. The four men who are on the lifct for the re ceiving battle, are Peters, Wlthorow, Rruggy and Mack Wheat. Mack In nt u holdout, but it is likely thnt he will sign the papers before the club has been here a week longer. It la a remarkably strange fact that Peters has never been In the big show na a regular. He has been playing baseball for a number of years; and la now twenty-nine. His hitting in the minora has been very good and ho has one of the finest arms In the majora Wltherow also has a good arm and may eomo through. He Is a sturdy bnckston and lo nlreiidy In good condi tion. In the game yesterday and in morning practice Wltherow did some line throwing to the bases. Ilruggy Confident Rruggy did not arrive until early yea terday morning and he didn't get into uniform until the afternoon. He was not used in the game, but helped warm up the pitchers, llnfira-v hnK always been n remarkable athlete, and he has confidence. It Is. therefore, a certainty that if he does not get a catching Job the Phillies' staff will be a good one. In Philadelphia Rruggy Is only known as a basketball player. Ho has helped keep Qermantown at the top in the Eastern League all winter and has plnved with Springfield hnd Scranton. Throughout the winter Rruggy has played from lx to eight gamck u week, consequently he is in the best possible condition. In fact, he Is always In shape, for lie trains eleven months out of the year and has been doing this for many seasona, October Is the only month that he is not working at fcome form of athletlca. Rruggy llkcs football better than any of the other sporte, but after he became a professional he gave up the gridiron, because there was more money in base ball and basketball. He formerly played fullback on the Ruffalo football team with Speara and a number of other ex college stars. He lives In Kllznbeth, N. J.
