The Value
of Money
Present quotations of Liberty
Bonds afford perhaps one of
tho best indications of how
cxpensivo it is for individuals
or corporations to obtain funds
even for their routine require
ments. As all authorities are prophe
sying easier money and a3 a
natural result lower interest
rates, this means that oppor
tunities such as the following
cannot exist indefinitely.
On an investment of $750 In a
first mortgage bond, you will
receive 550 n year and $1000
in 1042.
Other examples will bo given
upon request for our special

Atterbury Statement to Labor
Board Fails to Disturb
Rail Group
New Yorlt. Feb. 3. Shortly after
noon the stock market nfrntii ran into
0 per cent call money, after an open
ing at S per cent. In the morning Vice
President Attcrbury's pessimistic state
ment concerning railroad operations
and the highly nervous manner in which
foreign cichange acted had unsettled
prices gencrnlly. The fact that no great
change followed tho tightening In money
rntcs was taken to Indicate that, al
though tho market is now entirely on
the defensive, nevertheless it bas a re
sistance, power that must be reckoned
with.
The Atterbury declaration to tho la
bor board that many railroads are not
only not earning now, but have no pros
pects of earning their bare operating
expenses under the present conditions
of operation costs and traffic, failed
to greatly disturb prices in the rail
group. Northern Pacific, more in an
swer to profit taking from yesterday's
rise, suffered a 1! point Io.s. Heading
was off fractionally. Southern Pacific
held firm. Texas Pacific, moving con
trary to tlie general current, advanced
- points at one time, to 23V4. This
move was attributed to pool operations
based on the favorable statement re
cently made in regard to the road's
earning from oil contributions.
Tho steels, apparently discounting the
long predicted price cutit in the steel
industry, all sank to lower levels with
the exception of United States Steel,
which maintained a good show of firm
ness around Its opening price. Crucible
gave uay more than 2 points and Ito
public and Ilethlehem each lost a point.
Ualdwin was olT fractionally.
Heavj trading again featured Gen
eral Asphalt which, after opening ofT
a point, rallied to above t!(l before it
pgain went fractionally below Co.
Mexican Petroleum declined a point and
Hoyal Dutch, under severe selling, lost
2 points. Sinclair moved narrowly.
Other oils were weak.
Coppers showed little life. In fact,
since the announcement that a plan
was on foot to take care of tho surplus
supply of copper so as to remove them
temporarily from the market, tho cop
per shares have been decided! inactive.
It is reported that copper consumers are
following their waiting policy and de
laying entering the market, actuated by
the belief that prices will come lower.
