Business and Financial Outlook
January 15, 1921
Enough has happened during the
nrt two weeks of 1921 to 'auggest
that this year will bo ono of extraor.
dinary opportunities. Every read
justment period brings commercial
distress in so'mo quarters, but a
noteworthy feature of the present
situation is that the failuro record
in various aspects is moro favorable
than a few months ago seemed
possible.
Labor is taking wage reduction
with good grace,' realising tljnt they
aro inevitable in n season of de
clining industrial profits and wide
spread depression. With the low
ering of wages there has been n
further fall in living costs, which is
one of the most desired roforms in
these days of social unrest. The
household dollar is becoming more
productive and the codt of sustain
ing the average family has been
lowered in various cities and towns.
It is a buyers' market in overy
sense of tho word. It is also true,
however, that many merchandise
stocks aro so low as to necessitate
heavy, buying by retail merchants
and others as soon as the turn
comes. The turn i3 surely not far
off in some industries.
tf ft
It is highly important that busi
ness men and bankers should unite
in fighting the cancellation evil, for
if commercial contracts are subject
to cancellation and the reactions of
a falling market, the task of financ
ing general trade operations and
the extension of single name credit
to merchants and manufacturer
will become more dangerous than
heretofore.
, H f
While there are many uncertain
tics to rockon with, the outstanding
fact is that the United States was
novcr as great ns it is today, and
that tho pcoplo were novcr moro
determined to make life moio
genuinely worth living for those in
this country and in other parts of
the world.
