We Need Better Spellers
To the Kdltor of thr Evenina Public l.nla'-r:
Sir I havo been reaomg In your exetj.
lont paper, the Kigsixo Pciuic Lkisimi u
letter from Mr. D. L. Greene, which Inter
ests mo very much. I qulta ugree with
his views regarding the present extern of
Instruction In our public schools, Mr.
Greene tells of his son's deflclenci In the
most essential branches of education. He
Is not the only hsd speller turned out by
tho Phil idelphla schools. I do not think
nv of the rjresont day schools itlve the
proper time and nttcntlon to spilling
read-
Ing, grammar and pronunciation.
Another cauw of the poor spelling Is that
spell,ng la not taught In the lower grades
Children should he taught spelling almost
as soon as thuy know their alphabet, begin
ning with words of one syllablo
In the schools here opelllng seems to be
one of the final accomplishments, and us
for parsing, or grammar, I neier hear of
them.
I have a granddaughter. I expoit she wlll
graduate from the grammar school (save
the mark) In Februar) She gets the high
est marks In her room for algebra, geoc
raphy of darrest Africa, Russia, Asia, etc.
She ran debate on botahevlsm, tho Flume
tangla and Texan troubles: Mayor Mooro
and Pooh Hah, but alas, for reading nnd
spelllnr. lost arts.
1 wish this child to enter business school
In March. Well, the business school fees
have been raised from S12 per month to J-'O
so It would not do to rend her there to learn
to tpell st J2U Ir montn l must teacn
her spelling at home heforo I send her to
business school.
I um thinking of tolling a clas of hoy
and girls and preparing them so they cuuld
start on stenography und tjpewrltlng in
stead ot spelling.
Hop to hear from Mr. Oreene again
