ifTWr' yt ' r-h f t w- r EVENING PUBLIC tEDGERr-PHILADEIiPHIA, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1920 91 f, JUST GOSSIPABOUT PEOPLE Nancy Wynne TalJcs of the Benedicks Ball Held Last Night in the Academy Foyer She Sees Some ( Pretty Gowns at Yarnalls' Ball THK Hcncdlcka bnll wan n most beau tlful nffnlr. I liiwe never saeu any thing bo picttirewiue an that foyer at the Academy The palo cream of the walls and the glistening eryatat of the mirrors, the green of the palms and the Christ massy decorations made a marvelous background for the beautiful gowns and Jewels of the women. The dancing was In the foyer itself and the auppcr was eerved aa a buffet affair In the lobby, which ii under the foyer. The guests danced otv through supper and the ball lasted until very, late "this morning. The dancing was everything that one would expect at the Hcnedlckn, digni fied and graceful, nnd the cream of rhlladelphla'a socIal.net attended. Mrs. Wheeler was unable to do pres ent to receive and Mrs. Charlton Yarnall was asked to take her plarc. The other women receiving included Jdrs. Hen Chew, Mrs. Alexander Van Ilcnssclaer, Mrs. George Ij. Harrison, Jr., and Mrs. Edward Lowber Welsh. Mrs. Varnall wore a wonderful gown of gold brocade and Mrs. Vnn Itcnssc liter's gown was of white velvet cut equarc at the neck and made with a short train. Another lovely gown was the one worn by Mrs. Welsh. Itjyar, of gray velvet and was wonderfully be coming. TUB engagement of' Mrs. Howard Henry and Gouverncur Cadwalader was announced to intimate friends' Christmas Day. Mrs. Henry was Mae Fell, you know, the second (laughter of Mrs. Alexander Van Rensselaer. Hor first husband was Howard Henry, who died iu England nearly two years ago. Gouverneur Cadwalader is the son of Mr. Richard M, Cadwalader, of 2010 I)e Lancey street. The Cadwaladers have a country place at Fort Washing ton and Mrs. Henry lives also in that part of the country, anilo, thc Van Itcnsselaers. Mra. Henry has one daughter. Sarah, named after her grandmother Many of Mra. Henry's Intimate friends were not surprised at tho an nouncement, as she and Mr. Cadwalader have been seen together a great deal of late. And we are alwuys bcenting a romance, are wc not? I HEAR that the dinner which was given for the aeamen at tho Kozy Korner Club, Front nnd Queen streets, on Sunday night was o wonderful suc cess. You remember I told you a num ber of the girls who came out last year, Josephine Thompson, I.uey Grey, Sarah and Margarctta Harrison and several others, have been going down to serve linncr. once a month to the seamen. They have organized themselves into a committee now nnd are known ns the ".Seamen's .Supper Committee." Mrs.' Whltaker Thompson, Miss Pauline How e and several others usually bo to chaperonc the affairs and a number of the younger men nave joined in wun the work, and provide inttsie for the Tegular monthly dinners. Well, to tell sou ahout the Christmas party, it was on Sunday night, and they gave the men turkey and cranberries, vegetables, eelery, coffee and rolls and plenty of plum pudaing nmi ennuy. There was a small Christmas tree on each table and bags of candy and favors at each nlace. An orchetra led by Hajard nowle, Jr., provided music and there was a short talk on the various Mays of rnlebrating Christmas in other countries as well as our own. Later ithere was a sot-vice in the chapel and rhristmas carols were sung nnd an ad ln'M given. The money for the supper was. raised largely by the card party which the mipper committee gave at the St. James Hotel In December and through va rious donations received for the purpose. It was altogether a great success. ANOTHER ball tonight, you know. I wonder how they keep it up, don't von? And speaking of balls makes we think of some pretty frock I saw at thcYarnalV on Monday. Lieutenant t'ommnnder Todd and Mrs. Todd, who ro vlniting tho Ramos, were there and Mrs. Todd was wearing n t-tunnlng gown of a Matey green velvet, the skirt being tinlshed In wide scallops piped with the velvet. Her sister, Cecily names, who Is to marry Emilc Geyelln in February, .von know, was With theTodds, or rather Emlle, she and they wre together as they came into the ballroom. Cecily is loklng very pretty these days and was wearing n gown of the most heaven ly shade of geranium pink velvet. THE Philadelphia Art Alliance an nual New Year's reception will be neld ns usual from -1 until 7 o'clock, and there will be music by the Madrigal f'hnrtis under the dirwtinn of Henry Jioti iietween Ii nntl t o clock.
