Duties of Neighbors
To the Kdttornf the lhrnlno Pioiii. l.edo'r.
Blr I should like to know Jutt what tho
etiquette In this clt) la regarding spur
neighbors I have former!) lived In a town
whero everybody who was lOnbody knew
ever) body Upon m." arrival In Philadelphia
ft few weeks ago I moved Into one of your
t) pleat blocks of residences I pass In and
out tho front and bars- dbor frequentl) and
see my neighbors on ilthor side of me, and
thus far not one of them has given me
even n friendly glance
I am not quite familiar iwllh the habits
In the city, but I would suppose that the
newcomer into Mock Is suonoRed to wait
.'for her neighbors to tp-an first I have
wen doing this, and I find that none speak
to me, und recently having engaged a colored
wom-in to do some vvuaihlng for me who Is
also engaged by my neighbor on one side,
this girl told me that sh) overheard her
say to another neighbor. "I wouldn't speak
to the haughtv thlngl" meaning, of courso,
myself
I would Imagine they would have thought
I Was bold had I moved In and then begun
speaking to my neighbors, so I am at ft
loss to know- what Is expected of mo, Prob
ably when spring comes nnd wo begin sitting
out the matter will adjust Itself, but I
am rather sensitive ns to what people think,
and I would like to feel at ease with my
neighbors, but unfortunately do not know

A Christmas Charity Suggested
To the Kttitor of the Krenlng Public Ledger-Hit-

a Por little child for several davs during

of doing good at this Joyous period It Is a,

one who Is In ft position to do a thing of
this character nt this time
If nil the families who would be in a
position to do thN would net, ever)' Poor
child In Philadelphia who Is going to .have
no Christmas would have such a celebration
thit they would never forgot During the
narthousand cf our homes were opened to
the sallor-i and marines at Christmas time,
nnd why cannot the name be done with tho
poor children There should be ft place
where theae children could be secured, elthvr
where their names could be posted or where
families could call for them and return
them If only some organisation would
start a tharlty of this kind it would not ho

Revive Old Christmas Carols
To the Vitltor ot the Evening Public Ledger'
Sir u seems to me a great pit) that
some effort .cannot le put forth by our sing
ing orgnnl-atlon- to resume the old custom
of singing Chrlstmati carols on Christmas
eve on the streets This has never been as
gmerally practiced in this country as In
Bngland, but today It has almost antlrel)
disappeared There are enough of such or
ganizations hero who. with a alight effort,
could secure enough singers to "carol
through every section of the city on Christ-
rnrlt- atvJk
What could b more beautiful than to
hear singers late at night on Chrlitmas sve
singing on the comers the old finilllar
carols "Silent Night. Peaceful Night. ' It
Came Upon a Midnight Clear." etc. V. Is
prohabl) too late to take up this suggestion
and make It general, but the city could be
imrtly covered this year, and bv" another
esr the entire clt) would resound n song
