merely represented the familiar week
end evening up operations of the profes
sional traders. On the ether hand, the
cotton market was In a scmidemornl scmidemernl
lzcd condition, with nil (he options
breaking through the lee level.
Moderate se'llng pressure, especially
in the steel, oil nnd some of the feed
shnrea. was encountered at the opening.
but the selling movement seen spent Its
force, being overcome by a general
covering movement. It was netlrenble
after the requirements of the snort in
terest were met the demand was very
limited, llather than running off aguln,
the market became dull, with the sub
sequent fluctuations confined within
narrow limits.
The question uppermost in minds of
most every one after the last three
weeks' experience is hew much of the
changed business situation has been
discounted by the market. It was com
monly supposed while the transition of
Industry nnd business from n war t
peace basis would result in some ex
tremely radical adjustments the mar
ket, by reason of the prolonged and
thorough liquidation of the last year,
had, in vernacular of the street, dis
counted the transitional period. This,
like many ether careful calculations,
was rudely upset by the seml-dcmer-nlliing
collapse of the market struc
ture the last three weeks. It is true
that the violent liquidation of the pre
ceding two weeks wns overcome te n
large extent this week, but it was ob
vious even te the unltlated layman, de
spite the knowledge that while some of
the mere severe sere snots had been cut
out, the liquidating merement was far
from being completed. It is rocegnlred,
of course, that such a drastic shake
down as the market experienced since
election is certain te leave in its wake
a long list of casualties, or, as the
street, calls them, lame ducks.
The severe curative measures which
have been applied te weed out the un
wholesome elements of the situation,
and which it tuny be necessary te fur
ther apply in ether directions, Is from
a security viewpoint making for sounder
end stronger conditions. In ether words,
It does net seem te be a time te en
courage pessimistic views en the mar
ket situation. On the contrary, it is a
time te keep a cool nnd level head and
restrain irera matting unnccebsary sac
rifices. If precedents count for any
thing the maruct should witnin a rela
tively short time find a stable basis.
There may be. further irregularity nnd
confusing price -movements which al
ways attend the adjustments of every
violent movement, but the juncture does
net seem far off when the market should
reach an easy position and take the
rest cure until it is possible te obtain
mere accurate mcasuremeutts of the
possibilities of the future.

limited. In scattering parts of the list
the market was found te be very thin,
which, however, was n natural after
math of the recent severe marking down
of market values.
Weaker spots were again found in
the Industrial shares. Electric Stor
age Battery yielded te 0Sl4. but near
the close rallied te 100. Small trans

in Lake Superior te !. At the same
time the effect of the Heel price cutting
was reflected in a drop of 2Vj points In
.Cambria Iren from the previous sale
of 37.
In all parts "f the list there wns al
most a general fractional shading of
