In today's stock market. The former
paused a marked curtailment of opera
tions, while the latter was responsible
for the continued Irregularity In price
movements. As a matter of Met, the
market fell back Inte the familiar trad
ng area and the confusing and at times
conflicting movement of the prices
carried little significance ether than re
'lectin the adjustments which usually
fellow a period of violent fluctuations as
only recently witnessed.
If anything, the trend was Inclined te
be reactionary. At least the least re
sistance was apparently encountered en
the selling Hide. This apparently was
due te the combined effect of further
profit-taking en stocks that were
bought during critical periods last week
te support the market and what would
be called Indifferent short selling. There
wan also evidence of recurrent liquida
tion, which, however, was of u different
type from that witnessed during the
breaks last week. Yet It was quite
rvident thnt all the weakened specula
tive accounts had net been completely
eliminated as many supposed. Such
ependary liquidation, however, is a
common experience in every great down
ward swing.
In se far as news was concerned
there was little te affect market much
either way. Yesterday's reports con
cerning the New England railroad sit
uation, however, were found te be
greatly exaggerated, and while much
better conditions could be hoped for,
still It was found matters were net
near se serious as had been pictured.
Meney market conditions in se far as
pertaining te call lean rates and the
supply of these funds were again rela
tively easy. Foreign exchudgc, en the
ether band, eased off some, while grain
markets were distinctly weak.
It was apparent as the session pro
gressed that the trading contingent was
indisposed te extend existing commit
ments ever the holiday, and therefore
after the customary evening up, the
mnrket drifted into a rather narrow
rut.
tinlns and losses were quite evenly
distributed at the uncertain opening,
but the trend became distinctly down
ward within the first half -hour.
In many noteworthy instances reces
sions were extended during the forenoon.
Shippings, bteels uud oils offered least
resistance te pressure, United Fruit
falling 0 pelnt!, Atlantic Gulf, 4; Cru
cible, G, and ltethlehem and Sloss
Sheffield 1! each. Mexican Petroleum
lest almost 4 points, Housten Oil 2
and equipments cased 1 te 2V4 points,
with specialties, such as American Su
gar, Sumatra Tobacco, Industrial Al
cohol, Famous Players and Sears, Roe
buck. The heavier rails included At
lantic Coast Line, Northern Pacific,
Southern Pacific and Reading, which
fell 1 te 2 paints.

It was another day of shading prices
in the local marker. The further reces
sions were made en a much reduced
volume df business as the transactions
in most of the purely local shares were
of extremely small dimensions. Moder
ate liquidation was in evidence in flat
tering parts of the list, but this resulted
largely from local conditions, and was
without effect elsewhere ether than te
further restrict the trading.
Electric Storage Battery retained the
leadership, falling back i-'Vi points C)
1 100, or the bottom figure touched last
week. At the same time, American lias
made a new low for the year, selling
at 20. an overnight less of l'A points
These were really the only important
movements of the day. In most of the
ethers, the trading was conspicuously
perfunctory. J. li. Drill and Penn
sylvania Salt, en small transactions,
were each raised a point. General
Asphalt preferred was also up 2 from
the previous sale at 83. Lake Superior
was under moderate pressure, yielding
te 0. There was little done in utility
group.
