Nancy Wynne Hears of Parties Galore for Debutantes
She Tells of the Private View at Acddehiy
I And Other Unusual Affairs
MARY BARTOW is to be introduced
this week j in fict, I never have
heard anjthlnj like the number of par
tics there arc this season. There nre
not so many debutantes as last year by
a long slslit. but the parties Reem to
be unending:, one affair after another
announced for this nnd that debutante.
Mary's parents, the Joe Bartows, will
(tire a dinner-dance for her on Wedncs-
diiv
Moriorle Gibbons is having: n Bplcn
MA lime! Sho is the daughter of
Dr nnd Mrs. John Gibbons, of Media
and Philadelphia, and her father, you
remember, was abrond with Base Hos
pital No. 10 for two years during tho
ff Marjorlo was introduced at a ten In
June. Sho was given n dance, together
with Sydney Biddlc and Mary Ilow
knd by the Charles Biddies last month,
and besides a number of other parties
she Is to be guest of honor at a dinner
Since to be given tomorrow night by
Mr. and Mr.. James Willcox. Sophie
larnall will be another bud who will
share the honors wlt'J Marjorlc at tho
dinner-dance. She is having a very
rood time. too. In fact, there nre din
ners nnd theatre parties galore. I
don't kce how thoo debutantes havo a
minute to breathe.
THE Academy of Flno Arts is to
have its annual water color and
miniature exhibition on November 0 at
8:30, and I think it wl 1 bo very
interesting, in iact x u.uyo ..m.
thoc parties extremely good fun. You
always pee so many people nnd have
Mich a good time. The hostesses of tho
runtne will be Mrs. Gideon Boerieko.
Mrs. Ailolphn E. Boric, d. Mrs. Jnspcr
Teates Brlnton. Miss M lllcent Dann.
Mrs. Hneer Elliott. Miss Alice B.
Bwing. Miss Bcatrico Fenton. Miss
Harriet Sartain and, Mrs. Alfred G. U.
Btecl,
The Academy is also to have an
artists' evening and private view com
bined on November 13, and thcro will
be dancing that night.
SPEAKING of artists' evenings and
such affairs reminds me. Have I
told you about the party the Women
Writers arc to have for their meeting
on November 1? Imagine it! Not a
member will be admitted to the affair
if she is dressed one hour older than
ten vears. In (.ther words, it s a Phli
dren's pnrty and they arc to play T'd
dledy Winks nnd Jacks and Jack
Straws nnd bob for apples nnd other
wise behave like anything on earth but
women writers. However, I have been
to mot of the affairs the members ot
that club give, and, believe me, they
sie worth going to. If only to see tho
dlRiiified cditori, of papers and maga
zititr. advertising managers and artists
behaving like anything but dignified
creatures.
For instance, n wee bird has told me
that one woman whose name is well
known in the writing world will appear
in full long clothes, n knitted sack nnd
a cap upon her flaxen curls. Another
Ins a pink nnd white checked Dolly
Drake frock mid another such n re
markable costume, one of those well,
no, I guess I won't tell It beforehand,
becauN." it won't be so funny when you
do !ec it. They nre going to have nuts
and upplcs and candy for cats, and as
far as I can see the Women Writers are
atmnt to enter upon their second child
hood. OF ALIj unique cutcrtnlnmcnts, the
one the Franklins wlll'glve on No
vember 2 will take tho lead. And why?
Simply because it is nu election night
party, nnd for tho first time women
arc to have nn active part in politics,
nml nn Mr. nnd Mrs. William BuCl
Franklin have planned a buffet supper
for their friends at their homo in Ard
jnore, and I have no doubt news of the
returns will be brought In nil through
the evening.
My, but wasn't tho last election ex
citing! We went to bed thinking
Hughes was to be our next President
and woke up to find Wilson was still
in, or rather was in again. Few of
us have nny doubts of this November
election, but no one can h,e sure, and
to it will be an exciting time.
T SAW Mrs. Wilbur Pnddock Klapp
in her car on Chestnut street one
day last week. She was very smartly
dressed in dark blue, and her hat was a
largo velvet model of that same shade.
She wore u handsome fur piece in snblc.
TEACHER had told all the children
to bring their birth certificates to
school with them. Miss C went
the length of tho class collecting said
certificates, nnd when Mary's name was
not forthcoming, exclaimed: "Where's
your certificate?" "W-w-why, I for
Rot It," replied Mary, hulf in fright.
Then you must go homo and get it,"
said Miss C , determined to make
Mary remember. The little girl hur
ried home (home being two doors away).
Mother, on seeing her back so early, ex
claimed in surprise, "Why, sweetheart,
what briugs you back this tlrao of
day?"
"Cause," said Mary, "Miss C
Wants to know why 1 was born."
