"You've Ruined Your Life!"
Anthony Ilarriman persuades Char

leaves tho next day for the city to
break the news to lits family.
TT WAS night when Tony arrived in
J- tho city and left the other men ut
the Grand Central Station Now that
he was here .at last, ho had a sudden
desire to break the news nnd have it

that his mother nnd fnther would both

address, and fifteen minutes later was
stopping before, a. three-story brown
stone house In tho West 70s.
He bounded up tho steps, greeted
cheerily the elderly man who opened tho
door to his ring, nnd tho next minute
was shaking hands' with a gray-haired
man who had come out of tho dining

roughly.
"Have you had dinner?" his mother
was asking.
"No; hut I'm not hungry. '.Anything
will do. Iet mo have a tray In tho

I was afraid you might be out to n

Mrs Harrlman lifted her delicately

Mr. Harrlman lighted a cigar nnd sat

"You're looking well. Did you have a

"Bully."
"That's fine. I hops you've coni'i

"You bet I have, Dad, for more rea

"Anthony, what havo you been do

Ho grinned Impishly. "People." he
said evenly, proudly, "I'm murrltd '"
His father took his cigar out of his
mouth, and his mother roso from hei
chair nnd came over to him. "Married :
Anthony, did I understand you to s.t

"Yes"
"Who Is she?"
Anthony, meeting her cyeH, saw nil
almost venomous expression In his
mother's eyes It boded 111 for Char

"Sho's tho loveliest thing In tho world"

Suppose Mother Demands Rlngl
Dear Cynthia Suppose n girl's fiance
wns at war and died In the sen Ice. They
had Intended to marry and ho had given
her a beautiful engagement ring. .Vow.
nfter bolng In mourning for qulto a
length of time, tho girl meets another
young man and. trying to forget, has
consented to bo his wlfo.
Now, the mother of her dead fiance.
Supposo sho should demand the ring
back, what would be tho correct thing
for tho girl to do? Sho holds It dear to
her heart. Could tho mother force It
back? What could bo done In a case
like this? Tho girl Is willing to return
It If It rightfully helongs to tho mother.
Thanking you kindly, VI.
Tho ring belongs absolutely to the
girl. She loved tho man nnd would have
married, him had hq returned. Having
been separated from him by death, she
Is not being unfaithful to him If after

she had changed her mind, and the man

havo' any claim.
Talk With Him About It
Dear Cynthia I havo known a young
man for over a year, but wo are not en
gaged : that Is, wo havo an "understand
ing" between ourselves, but havo not
mado. any public announcement, owing
to financial conditions on both sides.
Now this gentleman Is from n distant
state nnd I hnve never met hl people pr
corresponded with them. This young
man went homo for a visit not very long
ngo and when ho returned ho brought
me a little gift from his sister, who has
ft large family of her own. I Immediate
ly wrote' a letter of thanks, but ns yet
I havo had no reply from her nnd It has
been about three weeks since I wrote.
My mother thinks the sister should
answer my letter. Should she? Do you
think she did not answer Just to snub
me? I hardly believe that, for the gift
sho sent was a piece of her own handi
work. Should I mention this matter
to my friend nnd auk him what Is tho
matter, or nm I In tho wrong expecting
and answer? Thank you, Cynthia.
MONTnoSA.
There Is no obligation to answer n
letter of thanks. You should not expect
an answer unless this young mnn told
his sister you wore engaged to be mar
ried to him when the financial way Is
clear. Did you write tho kind of letter
that would call for an answer? You
see she may feel n little shy about It,
nnd If you said nothing to make her
think you would like to correspond with
her she may be holding back. I would
speak to your fiance about It. Ask him
If ho thinks she will answer, as ou
would love to correspond with her.
Do not let him think you are hurt or
snubbed at all, but say you wish she
would write, and when ho writes to her
to tell her you nro anxious for a letter.
Be slmplo and natural with him about It,
and get that Ilttlo doubt of his sister
out of your mind.
