MISS K. C. NEWBOLD
BRIDE OF MR. JONES
Daughter of Mrs. Henry Au3tio
Newbold Married at St.
James's Church
EXT Wednesday, October 6, wilt bo
the one-hundredth anniversary of
the birth of one of the great singer:) bf
the world. Jenny Ltnd. tho "Swedish
Nightingale," and ono of tho earliest of
slngcru who had a distinguished success
In tho Cn'.tcd States. While the Ameri
can tour of tho great singer was an un
questioned artistic success. It was ono
of tho most skillfully adcrtlsed ovents
thnt tho country has ever seen, the
business end nf tho venture helng
handll by no less a personage than tho
late P. T. Barnum, not only the greatest
showman of his time, hut alpo the
cleverest press agent that has cvor "put
one over" on a press made suspicious
by sad experiences or an Innocent public
ever will ng to bo "stung" again.
Xot that any one did not receive tho
full aliio oNils money In hearing Jenny
I.lnd. She waH a really great artist, and
torches, whllo enthusiastic New Yorkers
took tho horses from tho carriage and
pulled It by man-power to Castlo Oardcn.
OV COURSE, this was not all pre
tense, nn'd, In a measure, It was
Justifiable, for Jenny Mnd was a great
singer, nlthough It Is doubtful If many
of tho "art-loving" New Yorkers who on
that eventful evening performed the
functions ordlnnrlly delegntcd to a pair
of strong horses fully realized that fact.
In that day nnd generation It was prob
ably moro of nn unconscious tribute to a
very fine piece of advertising than It was
to a great exponent oi me an ot hohk.
Nevertheless It Is satisfactory to re
cord that this unusual tribute was paid
to an artist really worthy of It by reason
or ner artistic ncnievcmenis n in noi
nlwnyn that art nnd Bklllful advertising
scoro nfty-nfty on tho net result.
THE Italian Lyric Federation opens
tho real music season In Philadel
phia next Thursdny evening with the
first of Its series of fifty performance nt
the Metropolitan Opera House. The
opera chosen for the premiere Is tho
ever-popular "Alda," and tho advance
sale Is s.ild to be very satisfactory.
It is to be hoped that the music-loving
people of Philadelphia will early record
their approvnl of this attempt to give the
city grand opera at a reasonable price ;
nt a price. In fact, as low an It Is pos
sible to give this highly expensive form
of entertainment.
