remarkably good absorption powers, ns
well ns resiliency. Wlille some of the
recent aotlvc leadcrn In both the In
dustrial nnd railroad divisions of the
Hot moved fretfully back nnd forth
within relatively nnrrow limits, re
newed strength developed In other parts
of the list, especially among some of
the lower-priced rnllroad shares and
the recently listed oil stocks.
Overnight developments and the
morning news presented llttlo in the
way of novelty. Kchnnge on London
was firm and the arrival of nn addition
al S3.000.000 South African gold from
London was announced. Tho trading ul
togelier was more professional and the
operations! for tho most part apparently
represented tho familiar week-end even
ins up of this element.
There seems to be n popular belief
that the week's forward movement in
(lie market had its Inception pnrtlv In
political developments, or more strictly
speaking, in tho overwhelming Republi
can victory In the Maine election on
Monday. Xot so much, however, be
cause of this particular election, but
mom because of tho belief it fore
shadowed n landslide for the same party
in tho national election in November.
Iu considering tho stock market In
presidential years, one's mind runs
back naturally to 1800, more especially
at tills time, because nn effort has been
made to draw a similarity between two
campnfgns. In that ever memornble
eirr it was not until tho middle, of
Juno that national politics became a
largo consideration In the movement of
prices, nnd not until tho next month,
when Bryan made his "cross-of-gold"
speech, did it supersede other con
siderations. Thero have been presidential years
when the political struggle had little
or no Influence whatsoever on the mar
ket nnd that was notably true four
years and eight years ngo. Tho 1012
campaign wns very exciting; it began
in March, with tho furious pcrsonnl
canvass of Tnft and Roosevelt 'at the
state primary elections, nnd It occupied
most of the year. Yet it had at no
time any visible influence on financial
markets. FJven when Indications multi
plied that the Democratic party would
gain tho presidency and reduce the
tariff, trade revival on n sound nnd
healthy basis carried the stock market
up 1.ri to 20 points during the very
heicht nf the campaign.
In 100S the security mnrkcts wero
hopeful nnd confident through the
mouths between January nnd November,
to nil appearances the presidential cam
paign itself exerted no adverse Influence
whntever. In 1004 there was a halting
nnd uncertain stock market with much
unsettlement, but no one nscribed tho
unsettlement to politics. Of the 1000
campaign, most people believed that
politics wns n dominant Influence, be
cause of the sweeping decline on the
stock exchange. Rut In 1000 the in
fluence of the Boer AVnr, of England's
liquidation, nnd of the renction in our
ctecl trade and other industries, was
far more potent in determining the mar
ket than the political campaign.
No one can say the ulmost uninter
rupted liquidating movement in tho
stock mnrket this year was duo to any
influences in connection with the present
presidential campnign. Neither can it
be saul that the abnormal low level of
market values was caused by political
ini.uenees. Since the trend of the mar
ket has been governed nlmost solely by
monetary conditions, it would there
fore seem altogether reasonable to ex
peet its immediate future course to be
influenced by the same conditions
rather tlinn by tho political develop
ments. If the prognostications of
e.isier money conditions arc realized,
there is every probability of the up
ward swing in the market being con
tinued on even broader lines than
already witnessed. On tbo other hand,
if credit conditions still preclude a re
sumption of spjculativo activity on nn
extensive scale, the forward movement
will undoubtedly prove short lived and
artificial.

market weakened under selling by longs.
It was estimated that tho sales for ex
port in tlfc last twenty-four hours wero
about 7000 bushels. Moreover, Rterllng
exchange was harder, but tlie inquiry
from abroad appears to be turning to
Canndlan wheat and farmers In the
Dominion seemed to be satisfied with
the price. Tho receipts of wheat hero
today were forty-eight cars.
A prlvato cnblo said thnt the British
Government hnd reiterated that tho
maximum price this season for wheat
would bo approximately $3.00 to $4 a
bushel of sixty pounds.
Oats also lost ground after a steady
to Arm start. At first there was mod
ernto buying by leading commission
houses, but offerings increased later.
Tho receipts of oats for tho day wero
ninety-seven enrs.
