Electric Storage Battery was the star
attraction of the local market making
another spirited rise of 52.50 to 12T.
There was, however, a decided broad
ening of the dealings In all parts of the
list with material expansion In the
volume of business. This was accom
panied by almoxt a general upmarklne,
of prices reflecting a much more confi
dent feeling in all quarters of the finan
cial district.
Recent quiet odd lot buying left its
impression In the conspicuous scant
supply which was uncovered by th
Increasing number of buying orders.
This was especially demonstrated In the
case of Electric Storage Battery, al
though the buying of that stock had an
additional incentive In unofficial reports
! of some further favorable news for the
holders of that stock In a line of dis
tribution of the big profits the cornpan)
is making.
The continued firmness of Pennsyl
vania Railroad was another outstanding
feature, with that favorite crossing 42.
There was continued good buying of
Lehigh Valley, which also broke Into
new high ground. Such Inactive stocks
as Eiscnlohr and United Railroads of
New Jersey reflected tho reawakening
of investment Interest, these Issues
making gains of a point and 1 points
respectively.
Steadiness marked the movement also
of American Stores, U. G. I. and Amer
ican Gas. The only laiRards were the
traction shares and Philadelphia Elec
tric. The street did not take very kind
ly to Mr. Mitten's zone scheme, believ
ing It was impracticable within the city
limits. Philadelphia Electric was a
shade easier.

Commodity Markets
COTTON MARKET
New York, Sept. 2. Reports of
heavy rains in the Mississippi valley
caused a covering movement in cotton
this morning which ran prices up 12
to 48 points on iirst sales. The up
turn met heavy selling, largely from the
South, which caused reactions of 10 to
20 points after the call. ,
Cables were easy and spot news bear
ish. The market appeared to be very
nervous and unsettled, without buying
power, although pressure was not so
aggressive as yesterday,

QRAIN MARKET
Chicago, Sept. 2. Trading was nar
row Io the early dealings In wheat to
day, selling by a commission house,
which was presumably for the account
of hedging on cash purchases In the
country, being taken by a moderate for
eign demand and from covering by pit
operators.
December, during the eurlv dealings,
ranged from $2.35 to S2.35, un
changed to c higher, and March at
$2.30 to ?2.30, unchanged to c
higher.
Sentiment In some quarters was im
proved, but there was a tendency to
hesitate because of the downward re
adjustment In many other commodities,
Including the coarse grains. Receipts
were 02 cars.
Corn started c to c net lower,
with September at J1.38 to $1.37,
December nt $1.17 to $1.17, and May
$1.14 to $1.14.
Leading bear continued to sell, bnt
the ujBrket was held in check by scat
tered commission house buying and cov
ering by some of the local operators.
Increasing receipts and declining cash
premiums were factors. The weather
was cool over the belt, but no frosts
were reported. While the crop is a
lat one. the present outlook is for a
litre yield. Receipts were 212 cars.
OaUt were unchanged, but slightly
lower, In sympathy with a decline In
corn. Iiustuess was very small and the
market was featureless.
September ranged from C5e to
C5c, December from VSeOfic,
r
and May from G3c to 08c. Receipts
were 170 cars.
