New York. Sept. 1, Most anything

deMrlblng the operations today and
nbout the whole story would hare been
told. Once airnlii thn linn of rlenvairo
between tho railroads and industrials
was tlshtlr drawn. Strength and rising
prices marked the progress of the rails,
while In tho industrials It was a repeti

weakness in scattering parts oi uie list.
The lowering of the call rate to 7 per
cent, however, in Jio afternoon Influ
enced free covering of the shorts in
the final dealings restoring most of the
losses In this division.
Altogether tho market seemed to bo

7 per cent, indicating an ample supply
of demand funds nt the going rate.
Virtually all the railroad shares were

During tho morning interest ran more

the middle of the day the investment

There were nlso susiitclnus ear-mnrkj

the industrials. In that quarter nf the
market the movement was uncertain nnd

opened tiin-hanged to 20 polnta lower,
followed hj further tleolini-s which car
ried priees about 27 points under last
night's close
There was considerable southern Hell
ing early, doubtless influenced by the
favorable weather forecast and bearish
privato crop reports, especially from
the Southwest.
The afternoon market became somc-
what less active nnd prices held nbout
00 to 88 points below the close yester
day, and to a now low for tho day, in
the absence nf fresh demand from either
speculative buyers or tho trade. Liv
erpool cables reported an unfavorable
Manchester market while Texas ad
vices stated that demand was almost
wholly laiking.
Aside from scattered showers In Ar
kausah, Texas nnd Oklahoma, weather
reports were considered favorable.
The exports for the day aggregated
1301 bules, including 1)37 bales to Great
Rritaln and 454 bales to France. For
tho season to date the clearances
amounted to 151,108 bales, compared
with 521,408 bales in tho corresponding
period last season.

and oats nt 1. -100 .000.000 bushels
A downward tendency tirevuiled in
the corn market, and although there
were rallies from -tho lowest, selling
orders appeared on nil the bulges, r;'i
that prices fulled to rally In proportion
to wheat nnd tho tone was easy
throughout the day. The failure of
frost to materialize and bearish early
estimates by crop experts were factors,
and there wna also much talk about the
liberal receipts.
Resting orders took considerable corn
on tho decline, nnd some shrewd ob
servers insisted that the technical posi
tion of the market had been materially
strengthened as a result of the day's
trading. The cubh market wus easy
with prices ubout 2c lower.
Trading in oats was dull and feature
less, with prices holding uuchunged to
fractionally lower all through the day.
Tho better tone in wheat appeared to be
entirely Ignored nnd prices moved in
sympathy with corn. leading longs
supported tho September position. Com
mission houses operated on both sides,
but sold on balance.

New York. Rent. 1. The New Yprk
livening Hun's closing financial review
today says :
Mixed movements In the industrials,
with priees' leaning to softness, and fur
ther quiet strength in railroad shores,
featured trading In todav's Rcsslon of
the stock market. Business wns in
eraJnnllv exnandlne? volume although
It seemed that this was brought about
more by centering of interest on n cer
tain few Issues thnn by any rcnl broad
ening of scope, Low-priced railroad
stocks were again in good demand at
substantial accessions in value. Sev
eral Issues in tht list were not much
changed, but all displayed a distinctly
firm undertone. The steel industrial
group held Wfady, whllo United States
Steel appeared to have abdicated its
position of leadership tor the time being.
fonsiuernDie pressure wns cxcricu
against the motor descriptions follow
ing announcement of tho failure of an
other small automobile company, the
second to noss into the hands of a re
ceiver within the past ten days or fort
night, and a good deal of talk was
heard about "the survival of the fittest"
in connection with the outlook for the
industry as n whole. The reference
probably sulfa tho case well enough,
although it is usually easier to exag
gerate a condition of affairs in a mood
ittiirzeRtcd bv the term than otherwise,
The weakness in the lending motor
stocks was not pronounced,
News developments of tho day were
not greatly heeded. Existing strikes nnd
threatened walkouts have become more
or less of art old story to the street.
Irritation arising therefrom would seem
to be largely personal for tho moment,
a it is regarded as certain that they
will be settled sometime. They always
have, and one may as well be philosop
hical over a matter that can't be helped.
Trading currents were in a measure
diverted back to the industrial shores
in the middle of the afternoon when
cr.'l money dropped to 7 per cent from
tht 8 per cent renewal rate. This Is the
PrM time in about a week that demand
loans have been qdoted below 8 per
cent. It was understood thnt large bank
ing interests placed substantial sums
ir the money market this morning. Some
relaxation from the higher ruling rntcs
was to be expected with completion of
arrangements for financial obligations
of the first of the month.
It was merely a momentary condition
of things and had little bearing on the
credit situation as a whole. One of the
strong spotH wns American Woolen
stock, which wns influenced by an
nouncement that that company's mills
at Lawrence would reopen on the 13th
of this month. There have been vary
ing opinions nbout this experiment in
supposed battling ngainst economics but
no doubt satisfaction that the mipposcd
need for It has passed will bo genuine.
While nwaiting ibsunnce of the gov
ernment cotton condition report, tho
market for that staple was. under con
siderable pressure, but improvement was
noted later on when it wns disclosed
that the condition was not ns good as
anticipated. The estimate as of August
25 was 07.5 per cent, whereas 09
per cent was quite confidently looked
for. The indicated crop wns approxi
mately in line with expectations, that
is to say, 12.783,000 bales. Existing
weather conditions nre regarded on the
whole as favorable and it would not be
Mirprlsing if another million bales were
ndded In the actual output.
The forwarding swing became quite
aggressive toward the closing, the steels,
oil and others making substantial net
gains, bringing the industrial list as
u whole In line with the railroad ad
vance. This demonstration was regard
ed mainly as the result of covering by
shorts. There was no little animation
in the bond department, where prices
continued firm to strong.
