however, upon closer examination ap

support emnnnted from the short inter
est. The buying power otherwise was
vcrv limited.
Th unmJst.ihlo oversold condition of
the market which was plain on its face,
not only this morning, but also in the
rebound yesterday. Indicated that tern
pnrnry. at least, the selling of certain
stocks had been carried too far. This
alone was sufficient to influence n con
tinuance of the covering movement, and
while this element practically hid
against each other, the market kept
pointing upward. The shipping, oil,
motors, equipments, woolen, leother,
alcohol and tobacco issues mnde the best
showing. Purchases of the railroad
shares to a great extent were limited
to the dividend -paing group, which
were strengthened by the good crop re
ports. In the meantime the foreign exchange
market was In a more tranquil state.
Sterling 'opened fractionally lower, but
koou rallied beyond yesterday's final
rate, indicating that the Polish situa
tion was not altogether so hopeless as
many supposed. At the same time the
renewal rate for rail money was con
tinued at 7 per cent, and there was nn
apparently a good supply at that rate.
Of course, the demand after such a
shake-dowu as witnessed jesterday, was
naturally very light. Then there was
the favorable United States Steel ton-
j nage statement showing an Increase in

While the recovery movement was
counterbalanced to some extent by con
tinuance of the liquidating movement in
various industrial specialties, the rallies
were fairly well sustained until after
midday then when fresh weak spots
were brought to the surface the market
reversed its course and took the down

Hethlehem Steel, Atlantic and West
Indies. ISaldwin Locomotiv. American
Sumatra Tobacco and Tobacco Prod

ery of Initial losses In wheat today. At
first, there wan some scattered selling
by cash concerns. The volume, of busi
ness was ilght. A bullish construction
was placed upon the government figures
""December opened at ?2.m to $2.32,
compared with $2.32t nt the close yes
trrdny, and advanced to $2.3-1.
March started at n decline of , cent
at $2.3.1. but rose to $2.37 Mi
The receipts of wheat were 372 cars.
Corn opened weaker tinder scattered
selling and lack ot support, but com
mission houses took the surplus off the
market nnd it developed strength. The
big yield indicated iu the government
report was the bearish factor at the
outset.
Traders, however, were not unmind
ful of the fact that August is to be a
crlticnl month with the corn crop. The
weather in the belt today was clear,
but there has been sufficient moisture
for the jiresent.
September opened nt $1,42U to
$l.-ll,6. against $1.444 at tho close
yesterday, but ndvanccd to $1.4-1. De
cember started at $1.22 to $1.21V4,
against $1.23 nt the close yesterday,
and later sold at $1.22.

selling by commission houses. On the

Atlantic City, Aug 10. Marie Van
Doren, nine years old. whose parents
ore Texas avenue cottager, owes her
life to the presence of mind exhibited
by Hobert Gibson, aged eight, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Alexander (Jibeon, when
she tumbled into Heach thoroughfare
jesterday.
The children were playing upon a
bulkhead when little Marlp lost her
balance and slipped overboard. In
stead of running away to seek assist
ance young Gibson threw himself face
downwnrd, reached over the side of the
wharf and when tho little gird reap
peared seized her dress Barely able
to keep himself from being pulled nftcr
her. tho boy gripped his legs around a
post and held on grimly, meanwhile
screaming for help Several minutes
elapsed before his cries were heard and
the girl was rescued by men who were
working nearby. The bjy was com
pletely exhausted, but happy.
Neighbors will apply for a Carnegie
medal for the youug life-saver, main
taining that Marie would have drowned
but for his action.
