many cases to the lowest levels touched

The ncute sltuntlon was directly re
flected Id n violent drop of 7 cents in
sterling exchange, and the rntcs on
other countries dropped 10 to Jlfi points.

cotton and coffee markets, but bh usual
the possibilities of fresh Europenn out
break caused equally shnrp advances
In the grain markets.
The improvement hi local banking
conditions reflected by Saturday's clear
ing Mouse stntement was lost sight of
In the frantic selling of stocks when
the market opened and which, during
the first, reached closely to the propor
tions of listeria. There was wholesale
liquidation In almost every quarter of
the list, with virtually no discrimina
tion between tho good and bnd, the
one apparent set idea being to get rid
of thepi nt the best price obtainable.
As a matter of fact stocks were
dumped overboard by the wholesale.
This did not apply only to the indus
trial shares, which seemed to be most
Milnernble. but extended to the stand
ard dividend pa ing lolls as well. I'n
iler this avalanche of selling the whole
list crumbled and befoie the dowu
waid plunge was checked by midday
losses from 1 to 10 poiuts were gen
eral. The tremendous Hood of liquidation in
the first place was a natural sequence
to the impairment of marginal accounts
by reason of the disastrous downw'nrd
movement which prevailed all through
the lust week. The enforced charac
ter of the selling in many quarters of
the list, while intensified by the con
ditions in Poland, also reflected the
acute money situation and the antago
nistic attitude of the loaning institu
tions toward speculative combinations
and pools thnt had been concentrating
their t (Torts on various industrials and
railroads.
The manner in which many of these
stocks were forced on the market was
ample evidence that pool holdings were
being dumped without lcgnrd to price.
At least. nenrl all the stocks generally
known to be held In pools were among
the greatest suffeiers on the general de
cline. There was also considerable sell
ing bv many who had taken the con
structive side on the strength of the rate
advance.
The extreme weakness of a number of
individual shares caused fitful rallies at
times under the impetus of short cover
ings, but the main trend was definitely
downward. United States Steel, Reth
lehcm Steel, Republic Steel, lialdvvin
Locomotive and Mexican Petroleum
were among tho repicscututive shines
which established new low pi ices for
the enr.
The depression ran from ." to 5 points
in n large number of stocks. Sellinc
orders affected many of the seasoned
dividend-paving railroad shares, and
tlieie was a large outpouring of numer
ous low -priced industrials which have
recentlv been weak.
Stocks continued to be offered freely
on all rallies, representing a mixture of
beur selling, offerings b discouraged
holders and liquidations of weekly mnr
glned accounts. Some of the declines,
