I Jona concerned It wok believed that the rumors were all
v bunk and started for advertising purposes only.
. But Joe Dugan took It upon himself to travel nnd see
tthe world, and went to Lebanon ns the guest of the city
to make up his mind whether he should accept the City
Hall or the steel plant ns n gift. .Toe departed Thursday
;and was the only person to attempt to take high dive.
'He's back in town today so the official figures arc:
Reported to have jumped .lumped I'.C.

It wis through a piece of clever detective work that
Dugan was located In Lebanon yesterday. A telegraph
operator, who works the other end of the wire with
Matty Mathews, the demon dot and dasher, was rending
the morning paper nnd noted with much surprise that
Dugan had gone to Lebanon.
"This Is very Interesting," said the operator to him
self. "I shall find out If it Is true."
Looking out of the window, he saw a stranger walk
s' lng on the other side of the street.
': "Who Is that guy?" he asked excitedly of the office
'boy.
'A "Why, that's Joe Dugan," was the reply. "He's a
(well ball player."
5 That solved everything. Soon the wire to Phlladel
. v'.ph!a was sputtering and Matty received nn earful.
J" '"Send reports on everything that happens," ordered
Matty, tersely. "We must kuc.v the inside of this stuff."
500N the report) began to hum from Lebanon
and there teat plenty of excitement. Funny
how report can caus,c cxrifrmnif. Here they arc:
"' REPORT yo. J
"Joe Dugan hat partaken of a hearty breakfast
of fried fith. He showed good form at the plate.
He it about to inspect the steel pU:nt and City
Hall. A committee of pathfinders will meet him

Everybody teas laughing, so it must be a joy ride."
REPORV yo. 3 -
"Dugan is back nadin. He met Brick Mc-
Innls and went into the Palace of Btcccts, which
observes the midnight closing law, and ordered a
stein of vanilla ice cream soda. I hurried over nnd
tat next to them, listening to the conversation.
They did not talk like ball players, because not once
did they mention the game. I asked Brick if Joe
had signed, and Brick said he did not like to ask
'personal questions."
REPORT XO. i
"I went back to iroik and then decided to ask
Dugan myself. He didn't know me and perhaps he
would tmnK I teas a reporter. I trotted until an
other stein teas finished and the pretzels had been
pasted around, and nailed Joe as he left the place.

" 'I saw everything there teas to be seen in five
minutes,' said Joe, 'and I like it very much.

REPORT XO. o
"I can positively state that Joe Dugan is in
Lebanon, but I can't tell whether he has signed or
not. They say he will play tomorrow. Will let
you know if anything happens."

No Favoritism in Olympic Selections
SAMl'KL .1. DALLAS, the president of the A. A. U.,
has emphatically denied the charge made by W. F.
Humphrey, the president of the Olympic Club of San
Francisco', that favoritism wns shown -in the selections
for the track nnd field team which will represent America
In the Olympic games at Antwerp next month. Dallas
has stepped forward with n statement that Humphrey
misunderstood n telegram sent by Oustavus KIrby, the
head of the Olympic committee, and that that caused the
confusion.
Humphrey is quoted as saying that under the present
system of raising funds to send the athletes abroad "It is
not n question of the country being represented by her
best athletes, but by sections with the most financial sup
port." Humphrey voiced his protest after It was an
nounced that the Olympic Club will provide the $0000
needed to send its men, who are in the Enst nwaltlng
funds, to the scene of the games. He said he would
protest the payment, as he thought the funds should come
lroni the committee.
"The case Is unfair to the West," he asserted. "We
lived up to the tryouts here and to the Boston finnls.
Then when our men won their places on the team wc
were .notified that they could not go unless funds were
contributed."
"I am very sorry Mr. Humphrey took that view,"
said President Dallas. "It is due to a misunderstanding
on his part. The West has not been discriminated against.
To the contrary, there are a number of western athletes
on the team ; far more from the Los Angeles district than
from the Philadelphia section.
it JUJR. KIRBY sent a form telegram to the dif
1" fcrent districts, pleading for the various teo
tiont to start a drive for more funds. Mr. Hum
phrey probably thought that it applied only to hit
district."
Philadelphia Still Trailing Financially
THE letter which was wired all over the country by Mr.
Klrby wns one of the many stunts to raise more funds
to send the boys over, and shows how much the committee
is in need of money. The telegram wns worded to the
efTect that unless more contributions were made a full
team could not be sent nbroad. There has been abso
lutely no discrimination shown. The men who won places
in Boston will make the trip provided the 5:200,000 neces
sary for a team of complete strength is raided.
With six athletes from the Olympic Club nnd seven
from LosAngcle'i in the track and field list, besides the
swimmers who will go nbroad, it seems ns if California
has no room for complaint, Klrksey, Hunter, Merchant,
Mcl'achlson, Blhlman nnd Muller are the ones selected
from the "Olympic Club, nnd Los Angeles has Paddock,
Schiller, Sprott. Dnggs, Yount, Anderson nnd Evans.
As compared with this splendid array, the Philadelphia
district has only three men Shields, Woodrlng nnd
Barron, all from the Mcndowbrook Club.
But yet funds must be raised. The steamer carrying
the athletes is due to leave New York next Wednesday.
Only a few days remain and the committee treasurer is
short more than ?."TO,000 of the $200,000. America never
has lost an Olympiad nnd the best group of athletes in
the history of the sport is awaiting the contributions.
How can red-blooded, sport-loving Americans keep tm?
rubber band on their rolls? The Philadelphia section still
is far behind Its quota of $25,000.
Take jour pen in hand, write a check and mail it or
a money order or cash to the Middle States Olympic Com
mittee, care Chandler Bros., 1338 Chestnut "street, and
prove you are a regular American.

A Few Lines to Pine Bodlo
Though somewhat overshadowed by
A trifle greater Batting Eye
Of one who ho'tit the record tway
Of baseballs driven far away
Though somewhat topped by one whose
swing
Hat just a trifle on you, Iing,
The while upon a daily lark
He lifts the missile from the parjt
Undaunted yet you take your stand
11 ith flashino cue and stradn hand.
As ieith an ever-growing thrill
1 ou crasn tne grand old apple Hill.
DV THE tfine Fred Fijlton nnd Harry
- Wills have concluded their rnmlnw
entertainment wc shnll know something
nbout the "-manner of Detnnsrv'n nnrt
suitable opponent. Fulton's campaign,
which included mnre ifln-htlnc tlinn nnv
othor heavyweight has known in two
yjars. leaves him a tidy choice over
Wills, unless another upset is per
sonally conducted into camp, Fulton is
still Numbor Two among tho leading
heavyweights, outranked only by
Dcmpscy.
Tetl Ray's PJpo
rnKl) KAY is not only n fine golfer.
f- The big Kngllshmnn hns still an
other marvelous knack. He can carry
a lighted pipe, and keep it lighted, in
a rain too heavy for any one but an
expert to carry an umbrella.
Back in 1013 wo followed him for
the better part of thirty-six holes nt
Bnawncc. A combination cloudburst
and deluge was in the act of swashing
the landscape into a toam.
No ono else could smoke, oven under
a .trtcc' 11F.vcry ci8.ar' clgnrctto and
match within a radius o twenty-two
miles was soaked.
l.B"tunJ., thc wh,,e' slogging-nlong
through thc downpour, Ray's pipo con
tinued to emit smoke, which circled up
through the rain after the manner or
a cabin chimney. It was a great ex
hibition nnd elicited as much admira
tion from the gallery as Ray's mighty
niblick swipes called forth.
Not Quito All
A FTER nil," writes a correspond
A. ,nt. "isn't Ruth's ability to hit
these home runs merely a matter of
his tremendous physical bulk? Just
what else figures?"
By no mentis. Herc-ls an example.
hen Ruth had mado twenty-nine home
runs he was naturally more than keen
to beat his old record nnd establish n
new mark. Opposing pitchers were
just as keen not to be the selected goats
whoso name or names might be carried
down in the records as tho victim.
So for two days no pitcher would
give Ruth a chance. lie wns cither
walked or forced to hit nt bad balls.
Finally ho came up in thc second
came of a White Sox doublo-hcadcr with
Pipp on first. It wns poor strategy
here to walk Ruth with ono out and
the Sox leading by a run.
After getting the big slugger at 3 nnd
2, Kerr was forced to lay one over.
The ordinary human would havo been
overanxious keen to peel the cover off.
Tho normal teqdency under these con
ditions would have been to hit too
soon, ono of the most common faults in
baseball, golf or tennis. But Ruth,
with extreme deliberation, stepped Into
the pitch, took only his normal swing
and deposited the ball into thc right
field bleachers.
Tho answer is, that with all his tre
mendous physical force, ne also lias
his nervous system and his muscular
