Money Uncertainties Had ;

New York. .Tulr 12. Price more-
ment ras uneTen In today, hcultntinfr
, stock market. The one encotiraRlnic
feature from a cdnstrurtlvf- rlfwpolnt
1 waa the ditllnetd which developed on the
rtpcllnpa, which wag areeptfd as a fivor

to the bullish party, and uhfeh refleeted
the complete nb?nee of celllnR pres

I the professional element.
I l nfavorable conditions In the steel in
rtustry, arising chiefly from frelRbt
conseitlon, and uncertainties attending
the money market were largely respon
sible for the uneven ton. The halting
(character of the market, of course, was
i made the more conspicuous bv reason
tof the striking contrast with the
buoyancy which develAned In tho Utter
I part of last week. It was evident, how.
ever, as the day progressed tht Friday's

and the rather disappointing bank
statements hnd exerted a sobering in
fluence upon speculative enthusiasm, as

tlons and the marked contraction In the
volume of dealings.
There were a few features of
strength, particularly among the rail
road shares. As a matter of fact the
line of demaractlon was drawn more
conspicuously than ever between the
rail and industrial divisions. The
former developed further strength dur
ing the progress of the session, while
the latter showed positive reactionary
tendency, and In several spots, notably
American Woolen, unmistakable weak
neis. Buying of the rails was fairly broad,
especially among the seasoned dividend
paying issues. Canadian Pacific and
other transcontinentals and also the
coalers and various low-priced western
and southwestern shares recorded ad
vances of 1 to 3j points. Reading and
Southern Ruilwaj retained their recent
prominence by breaking into high
ground.
In the general lit an equally heavy
selling movement precipitated losses of
1 to A points. Oil. steel, equipments
and shippings were the first to yield.
Textiles, tobarco and chemicals wero
prominent ninong the weaker specialties.
Call money, in the meantime, opened
at 8 per cent against Friday's renewal
rate of 7 per cent, and that rate was
maintained during the entire morning
mainly because of the much lessened de
mand. It hnd the effect to put a
further damper upon market enthusi
asm as indicated in the lighter dealings
which followed the irregular course of
prices.
Oils, leathers and shippings were the
center of another sharp drive in the last
nour, raus also reacting. The final
prices were near the lowest of the day.

hile the dealings in the general Iit

Electric Storaee Batterv started out
with an initial rise of 2 points nt 130.
but met profit-takng. which caued a
cancellation of n greater part of the
gain. The warrants made their debut,
with th urt sale made at 2.T. but the
price subsequently foil off SI to 24.
The limited amount changing hands
would apparently confirm the recent re
ports of n large percentage of the share
holders had expressed a willingness to
take up the allotment privilege.
Pennsylvania Railroad continued to
be in fairly good demand, selling up to
lO'-k. after dipping under the -10 mark.
On the other hand, the utilitv group
vas inclined to sag. Philadelphia
Electric shading to 22, t'nion Trac

to lO1 with one block of 200 shares
changing hands at that price.
There wus little activity in the mis

dropped back J4 to 14. Pennsylvania
salt on limited ouenncs yielded nearly
$1 to 6.". Insulated Wire, one of the
recent newcomers, declined V? to R0V&.
American Stores, after dropping to 44,
rallied to U.
Little of anything in the over-the-week-end
developments or morning news
could be found of a stimulating element.
The continued restrictions of the money
market still acted as n back log and
held market enthusiasm in a leash.

A Giant in Being
If one had prophesied the growth of tho
Canadian pulp and paper industry, it might
have been called an enthusiasm bred'of folly
tho "Idle fancy of an idle brain."
Yet those who sensed its possibilities have
reaped a wonderful harvest from their in
vestments in it as the progress of Abitibl,
Laurentlde, Brpmpton, Riordon and Spanish
River has demonstrated.
Yet the industry Is, if not in its infancy,
'scarcely beyond adolescence. Giant strides
are still to be made; and those who travel
the now paths should profit almost as much
- as those who blazed the early trails.
If you would aharo In this flrowth and In tho profits
still to be, write and wo will advlso you when, and In
what, to Invest. Address: ss

A time for
sound investments
It is not necessary today for the
investor who desires to increase his
income to turn to speculative ven
tures. A very unusual opportunity pre
sents itself right now to obtain very
high interest return on the most con
servative investments, either stocks
or bonds.
