FIRST SERIES MAY
END WITHFIVE TIE
Such Are Possibilities With
Playing of Today's Philadelphia
Manufacturers' League Games
OFF DAY FOR SOME
The Philadelphia Manufacturers'
Baseball League, one of the clty'B pio
neers In Industrial sports, concludes the
first half of Its season' baseball race
with the playing of today's (Sanies, ac
cording to the schedule. Tho meeting
for ratifying the second half schedule
hnt been cnlled for Monday evening.
Hut there Is every possibility that It
will not be necessary to start on the
second half just yet. A glance at .the
official Standing of the teams, ten in all,
rcvealH the fact that If two certain
clubs meet defeat this afternoon it will
mean that no less than five will be
tied for first-half honors. This would
no doubt be a world's record, according
to tho best of information.
JJut it all hangs on this possibility.
Nice Hall Bearing must defeat .Tohns
Manville and Hoopcs & Townscnd must
win from Stokes & Smith. The layout
for the day reads: Nice Ball Bearing,
at Johns-Manvillc; Procter & Swartz,
at Smith & Furbush; Day & Zim
merman, at W. F. Bead & Sons; S. S.
White, at Tioga Steel, and Hoopcs &
Townsend, at Stokes & Smith.
The Gloucestrr Connty League flrat di
vision teams are runntnir within a game or
so of each other and Glbbstown has an op
portunity to oust Woodbury from the lead.
provided the latter loses at Paulsboro while
Glbbstown plays and wins from Swedesboro.
This Is an off day In the Philadelphia Hub
urban and Delaware County Suburban
League, although several of the teams have
arranged to play oft postponed matches. The
Delaware County Suburban managers de
cided that It would be useless to play off
postponed games Irr the first half, as It
would make no change In the standing: and
Rockdale was awarded the pennant.
Hotilf eld , looms large In the Industrial
Amateur League since It handed the first
defeat of the season to the Lupton nine.
With Campbell pitching, the club la really
dangerous and President Hohlfeld looks for
another lctory when his team plays Ameri
can Pulley this afternoon.
The N'orrlatown Professionals have been
doing anything but setting- the world afire
this season. Now they have found the rea
son. A shnke-up In the club has been an
nounced. Sid Agnew will replace Dick
Spauldlne In the outfield, Pasquelaro, the
Strawbrldge Clothier first baseman, will
bold down the Initial sack and Riley, of
Upland, will bo behind the bat. All these
changes because they play Hltldale In the
next game.
After a lay-off of one week the Manufac
turers' Leaguo will resume. The big name
of the schedule Is the contest booked at
Houston Field. Twenty-ninth and Clearfield
streets, between Hale & Kllburn and Nllcs
Crane. Manager Cook, of Hale & Kllburn,
has strengthened his club about BO per cent
In tli Inst two weeks and expects to defeat
tho Crane club, which has only lost one
irnme. The management of the Southwark
Foundry announces that In connection with
the game with Naval Aircraft there also will
be an athletic meet, which will be open
only to members of that concern.
This Is an open day In the schedule of the
Montgomery County League, but the teams
have decided to play on the games which
were postponed by the rain of June 5. The
big contest of the day Is at Doylestown. with.
Lanadale as the attraction, Lansdale shoved
Doylestown out of first place' by winning on
July 4 and there la (treat rivalry between
the two, w.ilch leans a box office.

Fast Latvn Tennis Invita
tion Meet in Huntingdon
Valley Country Club
END TOMORROW
By SPICK HALL '
THE invitation mixed doubles are on
at the Huntingdon Valley Country
Club, But they arc badly mixed, In
fact they were run off quite smoo'thly
yewtcrday afternoon after they once got
under way. A good many of tho play
ers were late In arriving at Noble, but
finally all were properly paired off, and
the turf courts presented n busy scene,
with a large nnd gaily colored gallery
that watched the matches from the em
bankments. This nfternoou the matchc were
scheduled to begin at 2 o'clock and to
morrow afternoon they will begin at
2:H0. Incidentally, the tournament
will be finished tomdrrow, as It was
scheduled originally for only three days,
nnd Mr. Blddle, the official rcfercty. is
going to see to It that all of the matches
are played according to the dope sheet.
A Good Match
One of tho first matches to start yes
terday, nnd one which attracted a lot of
attention, wns that in' which William
II. Connell. of the Gcrmnntown Cricket
J ud, ana Mrs. M. W. Huff, of the Phil
adelphia Country Club, trimmed Eddio
Cassard, of tho Philadelphia Cricket
viuu, nnu jnss Helen Hcwcll, 7-0, U-
Mrs. Huff wns very steady, as usual,
nnd played an excellent game both In
the back court nnd nt the net. "Chief-"
Connell's service wns working In mid
season form, and he would have been
credited with a lot of service nces If
there had been any one around to credit
him.
Miss Scwell nlso played well. Sho
has been improving steadily ever since
she began to play early In the spring In
the women's interclub matches. At Wil
mington in tho Delaware state meet Miss
Scwell put up n fine game against Mrs.
Gilbert A. Harvey, forcing tho national
semifinnlist to three sets. The follow
ing week Miss Sewell did still better,
winning the Maryland state champion
ship at the Baltimore Country Club frota
n big field, In which were Included Miss
Ann B. Townsend nnd Mrs. Huff.
The hardest-fought contest of the lot
was staged early on court No. 1, After
three fierce sets, In which either team
had a chance to win until the final point
wus played. Mr. Merritt and Mrs. W.
P. Isewhall won. They defeated Brooke
Edwards and Mrs. Cross 0-8, O-.S, 0-4.
Mrs. Newhall played one of the best
games she has put up this year. She
is a left-hander and played No. 1 on
the Gcrmantown Cricket Club's team
In the Women's Interclub League last
spring. s
Joseph It. Carpenter, one of Phila
delphia's veteran players, teamed up
with Miss Carpenter, and defeated Joe
Thayer and Miss Brock in straight sets
nt 0-.1. -.$. Some of Mr. Carpenter's
gets were remarkable. Several times he
returned for points fast overhead
smashes from Joe Thayer's racquet.
As Expected
The victories of Bill Tilden and Billy
Johnston over the French cracks, W.
H. Laurents nnd Andre II. Gobert, In
the Davis" cup elimination matches yes
terdayf did not create much excitement
-here. Everybody' who has followed the
fortlunes of tho American players In
Great Britain expected nothing else.
Tilden's great victory over Gerald Pat
terson in the chullengc round for the
world's title, nnd his previous wlnsln
tho tournament have placed the Gcr
mantown Cricket man upon such n high
pedestal in lawn tennisdom that a do
feat would be the only tiling that could
surprise followers of the game.
Although Tilden dropped tho opening
set in his match with Laurcntz, his play
In tho third set was to indisputably
superior to that of tho Frenchman that
little is thought of tho fact that he lost
the first at 4-0. The scores of the other
sets were 0-2, 0-1, fl-.'l.
Johnston trimmed Oobertf as de
cisively as Tilden did his man. The
Callfornian was leadiug Gobert in tho
first set 4-a on Thursday when ruin
Interrupted piny. Whan they resumed
-tcsterday Johnston rjm the set out in
short order without losing another
game. In the second set Gobert made
n great showing, carrying the games to
G.ull before our national champion
could end It. The third set went to
Johnston at 0-3,

- IN DOUBLE BILL
Eppa Rixey Crosses "Jinx" and
Gavvy Cravath's Athletes Fi
nally Defeat Buccaneers
Pittsburgh, Pa., July 10. "It's n
long lano that has no turning," says
"Gnvvy" Cravath, nnd the long trail
ended ycRterday as far as defeat at the
hands oL-the Pirates Is concerned, when
Eppa Itixey put the kibosh on tho Buc
caneers to the tuno of 4 to 1. Each
pitcher yielded nine hits yesterday, the
Pirates horninf in with a double nnd
a triple, both by Walter Schmidt, but
the Phils went them one better, ns Paul
ctt emulated Schmidt with a two-basei1
nnd n three-ply hit, followed In the
last inning by Wrlghtstone's homer that
scored nnother run abend of him.
Uixcy's work Bliowed best with men on
base and three times the Pirates went
out with two of them tugging at the
leash begging their teammates for n hit.
Cutshaw wns given a life in the second
when Ilawlings messed up his roller nnd
reached second ou Grimm's sacrifice.
Jlarbare beat out a hit to first, but Cut
shaw stayed on nt third nnd then tried to
RpnP ,i,n oiimi.if iltf , lv ,i
score when Schmidt hit to Rixey nnd
wns an easy Out.'fl Carlson was then
disposed of and the danger wns averted.
In the fifth inning, nfter the Pirates had
scored their run on Selimldt's triple nnd
Blgbce's single, Carey followed with a
single, but again did Klxey tkhtcn uri
nnd get the next man. He showed his
caliber in the ninth Inning with second
and third occupied by making Heffncr
put up a fly for Cy Williams.
Incidentally Cy made one of the
greatest catches ever seen at Forbes
Field. It camo In the first inning and
Bigbec was the victim. Ho landed on
the old apple and it sailed to the
center field fence with Williams' in hot
pursuit. The big boy leaped like a
kangaroo and speared the pill with his
gloved hnnd, the crowd cheered him for
