It begins to look as if thp rroent

was ablp to weather the storm of the

'circles, there is a growing confident
feeling that thp worst of the rnllrond
situation has been seen nntl told, and
while the transportation industry is un
questionably greatly handicapped by the
inability to obtain needed funds for
equipment nud improvements, there in
already visible a rift in the dark
clouds.
DespltP the lifeless state of the
market and sluggish desultory trading,
the general list showed a much stronger
tone and acted as if it wanted to go up.
This was suggested in the gradual
hardening tendency following the tin
pven and somewhat reactionary opening.
1 IntPrmittPnt selling at the outset and

On n sudden burst of nctivity on short

extreme advances of 't to 7 points.

United Retail Candy failed to respond
to the efforts to force tne company into
prominence nnd ranged from 1474 to

showing n fraetlonnl loss, both these
stocks probably being Influenced In their
