While Mrs. Rieman was putting the
children to bed fire ttarted In the kitch
en. It was caused by the 'flame of n
gas range Igniting i pile of clothing.
Clouds of smoke rolled through the lotter
rooms and up Ihe stairway. Hushing
to a front bedroom, where she had just
placed n tw-o-weeks-old baby In her
crib. Mrs. nisrman carried the child to
the hallway. She then picked up Har
riett, n two-year-old daughter, and
with a child In ench arm started down
the stairway. Twice she waa driven
back by the smoke.
Jacob threw n blanket around hh
mother and the two children, and with
great dlffllculty Mrs. Kiseman reached
the street. She nnd the children were
taken to the home of neighbors.
After seeing his mother nnd little
sisters out safely. Jacob Kiseman then
aroused Ethel, his six-year-old sister,
and managed to carry her flown the
blnirway.
A neighbor summoned the firemen by
telephone. They confined the flames
to the. first floor. The lire caiityid sev
eral hundred dollars damage.

A great Chicago packer was informed by one of
his division sales managers that their toilet soap
Was not moving off the dealers' shelves in Texas
and the Southwest. The market there was over
stocked. "That's easy stop shipments for ninety days,"
was the snappy answer.
Here, if you please, we have one way of stimu
lating demand, i. e., curtail supply.
Another way is the method of the Raisin Grow
ers' Association of Califqrnia.
Three years ago the per capita consumption of
raisins was one pound.
By advertising, the growers increased consump
tion (before prohibition) to three pounds per
capita.
By advertising, our Chicago packer could have
increased the consumption of his toilet soap or of
his cheaper cuts of meat, if he so desired.
This method has been established beyond
question in practice, not only by the Raisin Grow
ers, but by many growers' associations and manu
facturers. However, an advertising campaign to influence
a nation's habits must be continued steadily for
years.
