Annual Caution Against Use of
Infoctod Water Given to
Vacationists
RECOMMENDS VACCINATION
rhitadelphlans leaving the city for
vacation's in th,c country or at the sea
shore arc urged to take strict precau
tions to protect themselves against
tphoitl fever.
The prevalence of this disease among
persons who expose themselves to un-
muni rlks In the summer has resulted
in the particular designation of "vnen
tion typhoid" as among the city's pre
ventable Ills. It has always developed
in this city after the vacationists have
returned.
The disease devcloni very slowly and
for this renon typhoid becomes preva
lent in this city in the late summer nnd
earlv autumn of every ear. About one
third of all the cases reported through
out the jear occur during the months
of August and September, according to
the health. bulletin on the subject which
has been lued bv"Dr. C. Lincoln Fur
bush, director of the Department of
Public Health.
"Twentv. -five per cent of. the cases
during thc-c months are traced to out
oftown sources," said the director.
"It is, therefore, timely to warn va
cationists about the danger of contract
ing typhoid fever.
"The water and milk supply arc the
chief sources of infection in summer
resorts, while the less frequent sources
arc foods contaminated by Hies nnd by
handling, raw vegetables washed in In
fected water or taken from fields fer
tilized with night soil, seafood taken
from sewage-polluted waters nnd bath
ing In lnfeted streams.
"One of the ways of protecting one's
self agnlnst tills disease is by vacci
nation. This method was used with
great success in the army and navy dur
ing the world war. Every soldier nnd
sailor was required to submit to this
protective inoculation. The result was
convincing proof of the value of typhoid
vaccination.
'Tersons who intend to travel during
the summer months or at any other
time of the jrar will do well'by applying
to their familj phjslcinn for vaccina
tion. "This procedure, however. Is not a
substitute for the general recognized
sanitary measures, such fls filtration of
water, pasteurization of milk, elimina
tion of breeding placei of flies, protec
tion of foodstuffs from dut and han
dling, but is nnlv an ndiunct to them.
"Last car Philadelphia had the low
est typhoid death rate in its history.
There is cery reason to believe that
this record could be made the lowest
in the countrv if the imported cases of
infection could be eliminated." ,.
