members of the exchange and tradeis
from tlio linancinl district the trading
was naturally listless. What the mar
ket, however, lacked In volume of deal
ings and in breadth. It more than mado
up in strength and in a distinct harden
log tendency ot prices. On n very
modest demand substantial gains were
recorded in most nil parts of the list.
Little more attention thnn usual wns
given to the rnilronds, which with the
equipments were tho outstanding fea
tures, The oils nnd steel shares, how
ever, again commanded a large share of
attention.
Because of the light How of business,
the day's operations reflected little of
public sentiment, and. ntt n matter of
fact, were made up lnrgely of the fa
miliar week-end evening up of the pro
fessional traders, this time nmone the
lesser element, as most of the big traders
were conspicuous by their nbseuco.
When these covering or profit-taking
operations were concluded the market
drifted into n narrow rut, ns there was
obviousij little inclination to make new
or extend old commitments, because of
tho possibility of unfavorable devel
opments (luring the two dajs' suspension
of business. While market sentiment,
compared with n week ago, reflected
material improvement, confidence to a
largo degree is still conspicuously lack
ing.
Corrective measures again were en
forced in tiie fiuancinl markets this
week, ns indicnted bv the smnller oper
ations on the stock exchange. The
tone was steadier, however, and greater
confidence prevniled. The process of
price reduction extended to the point
wnere it encninpnsseil provisions and
other foodstuffs, nlbeit. in moderate
degree, while such commodities as tex
tiles nnd lenthers experienced further
depreciation. Ou every liaud it was
conceded that substantial benefits al
ready have resulted from additional cur
tailment of credits, excent in Instances
where this policy has temporarily af
fected productive enterprises and legi
timate business expansion.

parent change to the local money mar
ket, call loans lending throughout the
week nt 0 per cent, subject to slight
hardening. Time louns running into tho
midyear were comparatively negligible,
however, at SW. to S-'Vi per cent bid.

Germany and Austria, with marked bet
terment in the Italian rate, featured the
active dealiugs in foreign exchange.

figures announced today by the Depart

Imports from Brazil of $38 800,000

ports while exports to that i-ountry

the preceding month. Artceirtino. ship
ped 121,600,000 worth of Koods to this
country, an Increatw of J2.4Ort.O0O over
March, airalnst a drop In Imports to

Imports from Chile and Uruguay

Been Passed
While the trading was listless and of
a very small dimensions the tone of the
opening loenl market wns decidedly
strong. Initial prices with one or two
exceptions were established from H to

the dealings were well distributed, in
dicating a much better underlying buy
ing demnnrj, nnd during the remainder
of the short session modest gnins were
added to opening ndvnnces.
The further rallies made by the local
utilities which earaer in the week had
been subjected to considerable pressure
supplied the more encnurnging feature
of the early dealings, also supplying
further testimony of the disappearance
of tho uneasiness manifested in this
division of the list. Philadelphia Rapid
Transit moved up to 10?i ; Philadelphia
Electric to 211,; Union Traction to
31 K and United Gas Improvement to
42.
Further substantial recovery wns at
the same time recorded by Lake Su
perior Corporation, which advanced to
13T6. Pennsylvania Hallrond tourhed
the high peg of the week at 40.
American Stores continued firm at 44V!i.
The only decline registered was by
United Railroads, which ran off $1 to
105 on small offerings.
Seldom are such wide and violent
price movements in the local stocks
witnessed ns tlint which occurred thl"
week in what may be called the lending
Philadelphia issues. Neither was it
supposed these shares would over drop
to sucli nn abnormally low market value.
Any one predicting price.s which were
registered this week not only for a
number of the high-grade dividend pay
ing stoi ks but good bonds, as well,
would have quickly been adjudged as
a fit subject for nn insnno asylum.
Market conditions, however, nnd these
unbelievnblo low quotations furnished
convincing exemplification of the seri
ousness of tho strained credit situation.
Tho critical condition nil along had
been underestimated, although there
wero signs galore, which openly sug
gested the necessity of caution 'and
drastic readjustment.
The situation readied a stage whereby
it was found imperative to apply the
most drastic sort of remedy. The dose
undoubtedly wns n bitter one. nnd one
hnrd to swallow The decision of tho
specialists, however, lins proven con
clusively to have been wise and re
sults were most encournging. The crit

Ho said, in discussing the semicollapse
of tlio market structure under the tro
mendous wave of liquidation, "is It not
much better to liquidate than be li

has come a rny of light giving hope that
the worst has been seen and n condi
tion which threatened u little short of
a catastroplio is safely bridged over.
Perhaps tho structure which carried all
concerned over the gulf of widespread
destruction might have been built on a
sounder and firmer foundation. It
was erected hastily on tho first aid
principles, and each dayrounts townrd
strengthening the underpinnings which
will serve to make the entire structure
indestructible.
