I IeiWALNUT STREET
fl SHOPPED
TO READ ABOUT THE LITTLE SHOP
PING JOURNEYS OF PAULETTE AND
HE CO ME ACQUAINTED WITH THE
SMALLER BEST SHOPS IS TO FIND AND
APPRECIATE BEAUTIFUL AND UN
USUAL ARTICLES OF .EVERY KIND,
SINCERE IN QUALITY, IN PERFECT
TASTE AND OFTEN DELIGHTFULLY
REASONABLE IN PRICE.
Most of you arc familiar with that inviting little
shop whoso slogan is "Exclusive Fashion flcnnonably
Priced." There you usually find just the ravishing thing
you want nt a price ns low as is consistent with such
excellent quality and latest mode. I never saw a pret
tier array of Raiments for lato spring and summer 'as
that shop (it is Bcnguycr's, 1214 Walnut street) has
now on exhibition, and that is why I am particularly glad
to be able to tell you that Uieir entile new stock is
i,cduc.cd 'Mlo until further notice. There arc fetching
gowns for nil occasions, graceful wraps, snappy suits,
blouses, sports skirts, unusual sweaters and exclusive
millinery. It is a grcab opportunity for saving and for
obtnining lovely things which perhaps are ordinarily a
little more expensive than the purses of some women can
usually afford.
Dance frockh that arc distinctively summer nfTairs are
difficult to find, but Giddings (frequently called The Paris
Shop of America), established in tho Rit.-Carlton Hotel,
Broad and Walnut, have such a model that is perfection.
Picture a Wattcau inspiration which Marie Antoinette,
in her famous play dairying, might have worn. It is of
white taffeta striped in a faint French blue and pompa
tlouretl in pink posies. And then the adorable bodice
actually n pointed basque back and front, over a bouffant
skht pannieted a-top of a petticoat (the petticoat is de
tachable, I believe) of tea - color organdie beautifully
embroidered. The sleeves arc very short and roundly
puffed and the deep, round neck has a frill of tho mellow
organdie. Tho climax is a trailing spray of decidedly
French old-red and deep blue roses accompanied by
streamers of French blue velvet all tucked just below
one of the fetching panniers.
To many bookshops have I wandered in search of a
particular volume to invariably find it at Campion's, 1313
Walnut street. That is why I particularly enjoy telling
you nbout the shop. Not only is it possible to get current
fiction there when most other shops either have not
received or have exhausted their editions, but it is a very
Mecca for seekers of rare books. Take, for example, a
wonderful set (very difficult to find) of those fascinating
memoirs"of the French Court, written by Martha Walker
Freer. There are If) volumes, bound in half morocco,
including 4 vols, devoted to Anne of Austria, 2 vols, of
Marguerite D'Angoulcme, 2 vols, of Jeanne D'Albiet, 2
vols, of Elizabeth De Valois, 2 vols, of The Last Decade,
.'I vols, of Henry III. 2 of Henry IV, 2 of Henry IV and
Marie tie Medici. Oh, there is a royal array. The set
is priced at .$150.
Louis Stone & Co., 1306 Walnut street, aie offering
a group of women's garments at "$50 each, reduced from
prices whoso range was ?9o to $150. There are frocks
of georgette, satin, lace, tncolctte and tricotine, not to
hpeak of a large number of navy tricotine s-uiti-, nil
reduced from tlie t.ame tango of prices. Also a number
of capes and dolmans, about 40 I think; now priced at
S38. are to be had at this same shop. Their original
prices wete much higher. I must tell you, too. about
another group of garments priced as low as 525 each.
This includes tan tncotine suits, and satin and taffeta
frocks of various kinds. Of course, they are all ery
much reduced.
Squirrel is n fur paiticulailylesirnblo for summer
in weight, color nnd general' appearance. Siefcits,
located at 1420 Walnut, noted for their reliable pelts,
have a most complete assortment of squirrel especially
tlesigned for wear during the warmer months. Thotc
arc stoles, choker scarfs, collarettes nnd shoulder capes,
nil with distinctive little touches of tho 1920 season. Tho
squirrel pieces range fiom $35 to $55 for small choker
.enrfs to long shoulder scarfs priced fiom $67.50 to $200.
prices depending upon the size and color of the piece.
Mole, too, is nn exquisite fur for warm weather. At
this same shop 1 t-aw an indescribably graceful capo of
gray tricolettc banded, belted and collared nnd even
csted in silvery mole. It is inconceivable that a beau
tiful gaimcnt of this kind can be bail for $275.00. Other
beautiful mole pieces aie likewise reasonably priced.
I am pniticularly anxious to bring to the attention
of Philadelphia women that .sanitary nnd paiticular shop
for fnstidious people, conducted by Denney & Denney,
Inc., at 1513 Wnlnut Stiect. It is delightfully spacious
and exquisitely clean, and as ou aie going through the
Mirtous piocesses to muke ou benutiful, which arc indis
pensable to good grooming, you gaze out upon a garden!
But what I started to toll you about is the permanent
waing which is tbeio done at its best and safest by nn
improved method. Do you know anything about tho
new wave? At this establishment it requires from two
to four hours and costs fiom $18 to $40, according to thn
number of curls. Tho wave lasts six months, or much
longer, depending upon the hair. It is such a natural
wave that moisture but improes it. Permanently waved
hair takes a wondorful water wave. The permanent
wave will be n joy to you during the summer months.
Rut do make our appointments early. Dining May and
early June you will get old puces, so I adisu you to
make your appointments early.
Those Cheitak hats at the esclusive house nf
Wcnger. 12211 Walnut, aie particulailv lovely jiu.t at this
time. There are stunning creations for present wearing
and models lavishing for midsummer. 1 was no less than
enthralled by an unusunl model of jade (the hue so
supicmely smart this season) batavia wreathed in laigo
wild honeysuckle of a ruddy yellow. The hat is quite
large, and one can imagine its cool appearance and the
comfoit of its shady brim on a hot summer day.
You are doubtless acquainted with tlie reputation of
tho House of Wengcr for superlative pelts, ami it is
decidedly of interest to Philadelphia to lenrn that
Wengcr furs now ordered for the winter season will be
discounted to insuie patrons a consuleiable saving.
