ice, it became knovyi today that this re
port wns prompted by the recent visit of
n special committee to Washington to
prevail upon Attorney OcVrnl Palmer
to alter his attitude .for restriction of
speech, '
Tho committee presented to Attorney
General Palmer, who is n Friend nnd
member of the Philadelphia Friends'
Yearly Meeting, an epistle in the form
of n memorial calling attention to "so
cinl nnd political progress which de
mands thought untrnnimclcd by sedi
tious taws."
"Deportation," continued the me
morial, "Intimidates people from clear
thinking nt n time when there Is the
grcntest need for thought."
Mr. Pnlmcr was further urged bv
the committee to use his influence with
the administration to discourage further
sedition legislation nnd to desist from
prosecution nnd deportation for free ex
pression ,if ideas.
Mr. Pnlmcivwas labored with for nn
