SAFE BONDS
In these unsettled times many investors arc seeking absolute
safety of principal, rather than the prevailing high interest rates
for securities running only a few years. The selection of a con
servative, long-time investment is made difficult by the con
fusing number of issues offered each day.
To obviate the confusion arising in the selection of a suitable
bond, certain general principles may be used for the ultra-con-seivathe
buyer:
A first closed mortgage on the main llne of a
large railroad, follpwed by a number of junior issues,
is always to be preferred,
Mortgage bonds which have been outstanding for
the past twenty-five years1, or longer, are naturally to
be preferred to more recent issues which have not stood
the test of time.
Bonds which aie purchased by our large Savings
Fund Societies are, as a rule, more satisfactory than
other issues; it is natural for thesd Institutions" to take
the utmost care in investing the money which belongs
to their depositors.
Bonds outstanding at a low rate per mile of road,
over which passes a lurge volume of business, are rarely
disturbed even under drastic reorganization,
We have, therefore, from tinio to time, purchased, old, undet
lying issuvis which are unusually conservative and which, although
not paying the high rate of Interest of new Issues running a few
years, neverthel&ss are severely depreciated in price. Bonds of
the highest character are now selling al lower prices than third
rate IssueB of three years ago.
