market seemed to bo under the stress
of n mild attack of indigestion, ft was
rnlled upon to nbiorb a considerable
lino of stock, as profit-tnklng was-the
order of tin day in almost every divi
sion of the list. This general realizing
was the natural seouence of the sub
stantial recovery which the list had
, mudc from the low level touched in
i.ist week's severe shake-dowu. It was
I also partly Influenced on the strength
of the old established street axiom that
with all the good newa out the mar-
,kel wns a sale. Then again there was
coniderablc diversity of opinion in the
'measurement)) of market value of tho
Kcnding segregation decree.. AVIiile more
or less irregular, the market held up
Iwell under the weight of the realizing,
and mot of the offerings were readily
I absorbed until round midday, when
i there was evidence of glviug of grouud
in most all parts of the list.
Interest evntered to a great extent
around the movement of Iteadlng. That
stock, however, failed to .repeat yester
day's exciting performance, although
' during the earlier trading extended yes
terday's udvance over ,'t points, while
the first and second preferred stock
i issues rose about 8 points. Related
1 coalers, notably Central Railroad of
New .Terse, Delaware and Hudon and
Delaware, I.ackawnnna and Western,
' were II to 5 points higher nnd other
rails gained 1 to It points. When Ueud
, ing reacted to 00 fnnn MY, around
j midday buying of the rails abated, while
the trading in the equipments, steels and
oils became more active, llalilwin Loco
motive, American Car, Crucible, Vana
dium, Replogle, l'an-American, Sin
clair and Atlantic (itilf and West Indies
were prominent nt overnight gains of 3
to S points. These advances likewise
ran into liberal realizing sales by which
most of the improvement was canceled.
At the ame time the reactionary tiartv
I attempted to make some capital out of j
I the pronosi-d retroactive 80 per cent war I
i tax, out the street as rule, was not ills-
posed to treat tins hold-up legislation
seriously. Neither was much attention
paid to the further weakness in foreign
exchange.

than ever, more particularly in view of
the general recognition that to accom
plish the segregation thee bonds must
be called. Tintl which can only be done,
as per agreement, at par and accrued

other gilt-edge securities by reason of
i their small interest rate in compart-
son with the much higher rates of the
newer issues. Today they sold at S4.

General Asphalt was another strong
fenttire, being heavily trnded In nnd ad
vancing 4 points to above 70. Shell
Transport rights were steady, selling
nt 21 to 23. SImms was again heavy,
reacting to 18',i, hut moved up to 38
around midday. Whlto Oil was steady,
selling at 20 to 27. There was a firm
tone to Dominion Oil, which sold at 15.
Tho Industrials generally moved with
in n narrow range. J. I. Case was ex
ceptionally strong, however, with trad
ing nt 20 to 22. Sweets of America
again ranged from 2 to 2V4.
