Sothern Pays $90 for 90 Miles to City
1. II. Sothern, who spent Sunday
and Monday in New York -city, had to
pay ?00 to get back to Philadelphia in
time to open his two weeks' engage
ment nt the Ljric Theatre last Mon
day. As the rallronds could not guar
antee Mr. Hothcru that he would reach
here early enough to mnke sUro of his
appearance nt the theatre Monday
night, Mr. Sothern decided to take 110
chances so he hired nn automobile to
drive him over. He left New York
Monday morning at 0 o'clock to allow
ample time for nrrlvlng in this city.
At thnt it was worth tho $1 per mile
over, financially speaking, ns the Soth
ern and Marlowe engagement had been
neurly sold out, so that if Monday
night's performance had to be cancelled
many people who got their money would
not be able to secure tickets, for any
other night. '
