otherwise, lip would draw minor char
acters in his books from persons he
would be in the habit of seeing fre
quently. "I guess, perhaps." he said,
"1 drew some of them too shnrply, for
1 couldn't help noticing that immedi
ately after a new story would appear
certain of our neighbors would grow
distant and refuse to even pnss the ac
customed time of day with ' me, and
others, if thc.v did snlute. gave mo black
looks at the samp time. It will be inter
esting to study the characters in
"Poldekin." his new play.

career began when he was threo years
