ADVENTURES
THE HUNTING PARTY
II) DAI1DV
fiVtfjt and 7Jij, nA.rn 6acfe tfo ffte
long ago by a charm given them by
the Wild Crcic, bring peace between
1 the tribes of Vaglc feather and lied
Dog. When the Indians go on a
hunting party, Watampoo, the medi
cine man, plots to have Peggy and
Billy eaten by icild bears, but is Inm
self caught by a bear.)
Walainpoo Up n Tree
OLD Watampoo jelled as the big bear
cbascd him up the tree. The medi
cine man was sure he was doue for.
"Ur-rumph! Ur-rucph !" growled
the bear, climbing after him.
Peggy, Hilly, Unlky Sam and the
Indian bojs heard the jells aud grouls.
"It's n boar!" shouted "flashing Ejc.
"And It's after some one," cried
Swift Toot Jumping on top of a big
rock the children found they could see
Watampoo and the big bear going up
the tree.
"Help!" shouted Watampoo to them.
"Oct jour bovs and arrows nuil shoot
this b,car before he eats m up."
"We've lot our bows and arrows.
They were carried aay by magic,"
answered Dashing Ejc.
"I threw them off the cliff. Co lutb
the vnllcj and get them." yelled Watam
poo. who was so scared he confeed his
rvl' deed without Knowing what he was
doing.
"We mint K"t the bows and ar
rows," they ulioiitid. and tnrtod for the
vallej. The Indian bovs, thinking that
what the White Spirits did ui right.
ran after them. Hut tliej limit 't gone
ten Hteiw when n loud growl brought
them to u sharp stop. There ahead of
them, climbing the hill as fast ns it
could, was a ccoml bear. They
couldn't get by it and they had noth
ing with which to fight It. The only
thing to do was to climb a tree as Wat
ampoo had done. This they did all
except Billy and Balky Sam. These
two hid behind u huge rock.
Tbo second bear made right for the
tree up which the Indian boys wcro
nnshlntr nml millicc Peggy. U
rumphl Ur-rumph I,r growled the bear,
and it climbed alter mcra.
Now Hilly had hidden behind the
rock becauso he thought that the bear
might do this very thing and he would
hao a better chance to have the others
It he stayed ou the ground.
Tr-niniph!" growled the bear,
reaching u great paw toward tho braucn
ou which Dashing T,yc was crouched.
Hilly seized his trusty lasso, whirled
It around his head and threw the noose
over the bear's head. Then Instead of
trjicg to pull tho bear down, he ran
around the tree as fast as he coulcl.
winding the lnsso about the bear, in
almost less time than it takes to tell he
had bound tho bear so tightly to the
tree that It couldn't move.
Now the bear was surprised and
scared. Nothing like this had ever
happened to It before. It squealed und
it squalled.
The big bear, chasing Watampoo up
the other tree, heard the squeals und
the squalls. It turned from ntnni-

1 At iiiuM' it forgot the medicine man ami
began to siuie uown m-
tin aid of Its mate.
"llee-naw ! Here comes the big
beir!" brajed Balky Sam in warning.
"Hee-haw! T feel like fighting n bear.
Hee-haw! I'll show jou the Kind of a
hunter I urn," and he galloped to meet
the bear.
Now the big bear had never beard a
mule bray and It stopped Its sliding in
n hurrj. What was this strange ani
mal rushing to uttnek it? The bear
looked Balky Sam over and then decided
It could whip him. It slid down n few
feet more and was just ready to drop
to the ground when Balky Sam whirled
around and ot fly with bis heels.
Wham! Balk Sam gave the surprised
bear n kick that made him howl. ham !
Balk Sam kicked again, nnd the bear,
roaring with alarm, began to climb back
again faster than it had cpmo down.
"Ileo-haw ! Come here and light !
braved Balky Sam, but the bear.
unumvllne louder than its mate had
done, clnmbered excttcdlr toward Wa
tampoo, who then began to yell harder I
than ever.
(Tomorrow tcill be told hoto Peggy
And Billy talk to the bears.)
