Trainer Leo Miller's dtock of oil, HnN
mrnt, alcohol and rubblug fluid wan put
lo good nc Inst nlslit around the hotel
nhere most of the Phillies were nursing
sore firms and aiming the weather man.
The I'MIs are Jut beglunlng to feel the
effects of their jogging and throwing.
Cravath sent hli tnn through three
hours of batting, fielding and Jogging
under dnrk-laden skies that gave away
to old Sol every now and then. Thr
tempcraturo wan Idenl. although a wind
front the Miuth luterferpd with Jilgh
flr knocked to right field.
Dave Uaucroft put In hla flmt prac
tice and had no trouble In locating the
tphcre as it came wafting over the
plate. He lined out a couple of alMling
infield hits which Leo Meadows ducked
as they wlieezeu pant mm ni snore.
Bancroft took about fifteen minutes of
fielding practice and spent the rest of
the session Jogging around the ball
yard,
Cntey Stengel continues to do more
road Aork than any other man on the
sound. He h having eome trouble In
petting his lower limbs In condition. He
ha about stopped limping.
The field was too soggy for fielding
practice the fiwt hour out and Cravath
sent Ills men through a long process of
tossing. He hopes to begin instructing
his men in base running just as soon
as tlicv have enough road work.
Toil ttmcrlcli, the unexpected otrl
val from the hub of the nutomobllo
industry, Is certainly hitting like a
streak of blue lightning in batting
practice. He is being closely watched
by Carlton Molesworth, manager of the
Birmingham team, who will no doubt
make an overture to the Phillies for
his sen ices.
Ilalph Miller, the third wicker, re
ported for his first practice Thursday
and took ohlv n moderate amount of
batting practice. Ho devoted most of
his time to jogging around the outfield.
Miller is expected to make business
nick up around the bravery corner nnd
It will be interesting to watch him and
Wrlghtstone battle it out for the hot
sector.
Bealnninz Friday the Phils will split
the warmest hours of the day with the
Birmingham Barons, who began train- i
)ng today, lne nrst exhibition game
between the two clubs, is slated for one

100-YARD SWIM KING
Dotroit A. C. Roprosontativo
Lowor3 Brooklino Tank
Record
Brooklino, Mass., March 12. Ted
Cann, of the Detroit A. C, won the
100-yard indoor American swimming
title last night in the Brooklino tank in
a sensational race, In which the four
finalists finished with scarcely more
than n yard separating them.
Clement Browne, of the Chicago A.
A., was second, losing by his finger
tips. Harry Hcbner, of the Illinois A.
C, was third, n scant foot In the rear
of Browne, while Ccorge A. Handy, of
tho Detroit A. C, trailed Hcbner by
only n few inches.
Caun's time was f5 .1-5 seconds,
breaking the tank record of 58 seconds,
held by Handy, of Detroit.
Cann used an American crawl stroke
similar to that of the other finalists.
Better driving power nnd a display of
stamina In the final ten yards gave him
his victory, enabling him to pull out
of tho fast field into the lead.
Hal Vollmer, of the New York A. C,
failed to get a place in his trial heat,
and Ororgc Ciinhn, the Hawaiian, rep
resenting tho Meadowbrook Club of
Philadelphia, was also shut out in the
trials.
