NEWS OF FINANCIAL WORLDNEW YORK AND PHILADELPHIA STOCK QUOTATION
OIL GROUPSTRONG SPOTS
OF DULL OPENING MARKET
General Motors Strings Into the Leadership Later With a
Spirited Rise of Over Five Points
New York, March 4. Some Improve
ment was seen in today's stock market,
out It was without particular slgnlti
'canco In that the elevation of quota
tions resulted almost solely from tho
covering of the overextended short In
terest. The recovery movement, however,
was of a general character, jet the
movement was more on individual lines
rather than of a collective form. That
is to say, one group after another
was run up so that in the cud it
embraced ulmost the entire list. The
increasing dullness which accompanied
pthc irregularity of tho preceding ses
sions plainly suggested the market ap
proaching an oversold condition, which
was to ba expected in view of the ex
tremely narrow limitations of tho cur
rent speculation.
It started with the oils, shifted, to
tho shippings, then back to the motors,
rculiifting tp the miscellaneous special
ties, then to the Htecls and finally to
the rails, particularly tho cheaper is
sues. There were suspicious earmarks
in thctc maneuvers of liberal realizing
in one group under the cover of strength
of another. A very common practice
in a trader's market.
Despite the obvious professional and
artificial character of tho movement
the spectacle of rising quotations fur
nished a rcfreohing relief from the dis
couraging melting away of market value
In thd two preceding days. Tho upward
swing, if it may be designated as such,
was helped along to some extent by tho
reduction of 1 per cent in the renewal
call loan rate to 0 per cent and the
strength of foreign exchange. Bills on
London touched the highest In a month.
Tho apparent easier call money mar
ket conditions, however, were more
supcrlicial than real. The 9 per cent
rate did not reflect any important Influx
of call funds for stock market purposes,
on tho contrary, the supply, in reality
is stilt extremely M-ant. A peculiar
situation, however, has been evidently
created by the maintenance of tho 10
per cent call rate this week. rrom all
Indications it has served to created a
considerable surplus of out-of-town
funds, which will be permitted to re
main undisturbed ns long as tho high
rate is maintained. Should thcro be a
sudden rcluxtlon, say to 0 or 7 per cent,
It Is reasonably certain these funds
would bo promptly withdraw, and which
would immediately create the same
scarcity ns existed before the call rate
wns jacked up to 1 Oper cent in the lat
ter part of last week.
Oils, motors, shippings and equip
ments Infused firmness to the dull open
ing, other branches of the list rising
or falling within fractional limits. Out
standing features embraced Mexican and
l'au-American Petroleums, Texas Co.,
Marine preferred, Atlantic Gulf, Amer
ican International, Worthlngton l'ump
and American and Baldwin Locomo
tives nt gains of 1 to - points-
ltcalinz sales caused reactions of 1 to
"i points at tho end of the first hour.
The market, however, hardened again
when rails becarao more active. Buy
ing of those shares centered in tho
chenper issues, especially Hock Island
and New Haven. St. Paul, St. Louis
and San Francisco, Texas Pacific. I'ere
Marquette and Southern Hallway also
participated, the advance ranging from
1 to 2 points.
The shipping stocks were again ac
tively traded in with those issues being
bought ou tho belief that the various
companies will work ns agents for the
United States tonnage, which has been
transferred from the control of the ship
ping board for operating purposes.
