43 years ago today Wilmer Atkinson
launched into an exacting world a modest
farm paper of eight pages.
It was small. Its circulation was limited
although 25,000 copies of the first issue
were gradually distributed.
But it was the expression of a great ideal.
In its conception, it was masterful. It was
the sapling, taking root, and destined to
grow into a mighty oak. Among those
eleven advertisers who appreciated the
incipient value of The Farm Journal was
John Wanamaker. -
This afternoon at 4:30 o'clock, in Phila
delphia, the 361 employes of The Farm
Journal will gather with Wilmer Atkinson
to celebrate its 43rd birthday. There will
be speeches, and as a memento of the
occasion, an autographed copy of the 172
page March edition will be given.
What a transformation these 43 years
have wrought. The 25,000 circulation has
bounded to over 1,050,000 a month. The
first number was eight small pages, folded
loosely together, not even cut. Today
The Farm Journal is printed with color
cover and inside color pages, profusely
illustrated, trimmed pages a fine
mechanical and typographical product.
Advertisers, left to take their chances in
the early days, today receive the protection
and collaboration of an elaborate research
bureau."'
Surely The Farm Journal has just cause
today to review the past 43 years with
pride.
The strength of The Farm Journal must
be attributed to the fact that the roots of
this enduring oak have struck deep into
the problems of the farmer's home and
work. Its editorial policies have been
As an exampl of this new research work, observe our "study as to when th
farmer does his buying," ehowlriR that 22 more business is don by country trading

molded by that breadth of vision which
looked far into the future, and built for
permanence. Its power is its overspread
ing circulation as innumerable as the
leaves upon the oak which symbolize it.
But this is no time to halt and contem
plate achievement. There are issues in
the world today so vital that The Farm
Journal chooses rather to dedicate itself
anew.
We find ourselves in a world beclouded
by unrest, depreciated currency, inflated,
prices and lack of production. It is a time
to make the power of The Farm Journal
felt.
The Farm Journal is vitally interested
in the welfare of the American farmer.
And this is true, not alone because he is
a farmer, but because he makes possible
the prosperity and well-being of these
United States.
Take care of the American farmer, and
the American farmer will take care of you.
Help him produce more at less cost. Aid
him to adoptefficiency methodsonhisfarm.
Assure him of sufficient returns on his
investment and work to enable him to
invest in farm machinery, tractors, trucks,
silos and blooded stock, and he will bring
down prices.
Greater farm production at less cost
through efficiency methods is the key
note of our economic situation. Give the
farmer his just profits willingly "a good
living and 10" and he will bring prices
down a-tumbling.
It is to such vital issues that The Farm
Journal rededicates itself on this, its 43rd
anniversary.
