Sir I was n war worker myself, Rn'r"? ftI,nltniWm!;h0ntnT?ontelyn W and most llkeT; be in the divorce court IZ to". BflX,y,Bnorttntl wlthl" P. bour, in our dlvorce-loving time, surely most men would try to or inexperienced "stay at home." But this is my humble opinion of tho So-called "Spiker romance." (Whero is thc romance?) It is to me. at this time, when there is so much unrest, so many sad henrts, a shameful, disgraceful mix up, and almost an insijjt to the nation a mnnnooil record during uic wur. I cannot see how a man who really loved his own wife who knew she was faithful at home, especially a father of an innocent child should be excused for un net of thut kind. Have men no wilt power or manhood? Perhaps one broken heart more or less did not mat ter. Men are lynched for less reason than that sometimes. I have honestly tried to forget nil I read, but the thing bobs up again and ngain as it will to thc millions who have read it. 1 have a hot and cold feel ing of murder when I read It, nt least of assault and battery, r wonder how many easily led folks just now will try the same procedure, if thc Spikers are al lowed to, nnd how much the country a moral btrcngth will weaken? It seems to me the man must feel like the proverbial "two cents." It seems good that the least said of him thc bet ter. As to the English girl, bbe, too, was in her country's service. If hbe was wronged, I do not see how living in thc same house with Mrs. Spiker, or even seeing her, will right the wrong. How about the children when they grow up I The blot is always on them, you know. A good citizen will think a long time before he marries ciwicr cniiu. I could not stand it. only one divine could, and none o us are divine. ,. , Then let husband marry the English girl and live hapnilv (?) ever after I know some will think it is letting husband off easy. It is. But what can you do? He really ueeds a neat little stay somewhere to think it out, himself, nnd not make others do the worning. However, he is not the only one. Well, it's up to them. J tiuuK. ns an e-ramnle nnd a standard, it needs a lot -' thought and careful procedure. It needs real punishment, not smoothing over. Won't some one please try to print in a paper an example of goodness, faith and loyalty to get the present bad taste out of our mouths some touching little story of fidelity? We need the vision of God not a mud -puddle. CITIZEN. P. S. I wonder, if it had been the wife, how generous her husband would have been? Girl-Mother Praises Mrs. Spiker To the rdttor of the Evenina Public I.cda'r Sir Oh, how glad 1 am thut Miss Knovvles's future is looking so much brighter for her ! I actually feel happy oyer it. I have watched your paper every da.v and I am convinced that Mrs. Sniker is an unusually tine, great-hearted woman. How many would do us she did? We cannot praise her quite enough, u seems, and her brother-in-law is as fine ns she. I hope he and the Aoung mother will be very, very happ . But why does your paper sav noth ing at all about Lieutenant P. R. Spj. ker? Surely he, too, is one in a tbou- kcep dead quiet and try to save their own skin first of nil, however refined and sweet their victims may be. Wo nre nlways, and often with good reason, talking about men's selfishness, especially in such cases, so when a man Is honest and rcspcctablo to tho highest degree let us bo frank and fair and give him a little praise, too. Surely life is not unmixed pleasure if onu is a girl Ipft nlono with a tiny baby how ever dear it may be to the mother, es pecially in this time of II. C. of L. I know, for I, too, am A GIRL MOTHER. Philadelphia, February -1. Praise From a Philanderer's Wife To the Editor ot the Kvcnlna Fubllo Ledger: Sir Mrs. Spiker has set an exam ple for tho wives of the world's phi landerers. She is on amazing woman with n breadth of view and a great ness of heart nnd charity that compel respect and admiration whether one uccepts her unusual views or not. I, for one, do accept them. She is right. She has done the right thing. And since I first heard of this re markable case I have been wondering whether I, if ever placed iu thc situa tion which confronted her, would be big enough to do ns she has done. I mil afraid not. In the abstract, it seems possible, though difficult. I wish that I might prove that big. But we women, so many of ns, arc the prey of petty impulses, of a certain petty, snvage vindictiveness. Mrs. bpiker enn have none of that. Aly husband himself is somewhat of a philanderer, though iu an innocent vvaj-, I try to believe. He hnjt tnnrlp Clean breast, voluntarily, of two flirta tions. And oh, thc heartburnings those; revelations have cost me! But in these cases I hnve tried to be brave, and I bplieve I have succeeded. My husband tells me I am a broad-minded woman. And I try to think I am. But if ever I were in Mrs. Striker's plight, what would I do then? Would I have that truly great woman's cour age und magnanimity? Or would I be submerged by a wave of petty hate and a cruel desire for revenge? How I would like to know? But I pray heaven that the test may never come to me. j,. c. Philadelphia, February 5. Were you in themarket for a sable piece, thc dealer without reputation iljould no doubt get little consideration, because you would feci that he was well armed with substitutes. And well you'might. From the lowly rabbit, or coney, upward to tho mink, no possible substitute for sable has been overlooked. Marmot, hare, fitch, weasel and muskrat are all used in attempting to imitate this inost valuable of furs, but the deception is usually poor fi3 to tho fact that genuine sable fur is long, dense and remarkably soft. Vesides this it i so peculiarly rooted in the skin that it may be brushed with tho hand in thc natural direction, from head to tail, or thc reverse, and it ivill remain as placed without apparent injury or loss of beauty. 77ic best grade oj sable fur comes from Russia, and hero again the dealer who lacks honesty has a chai'ico to deceive.
