STARS OF THE SILVER SHEET
AN HITITEIITO unknown dement In
dramatic tcrccn production, the In
troduction of animal comedy to relieve
tension, has been successfully pructlccd
la "Hack to God's Country," by James
Oliver Curwood, ndanted from his
story, "Wnpi, the Walrus," which will
be fceeu at tho Stanley next week.
Nell Shipman, popular American
tcrccn favorite, ns Dolores; 'Wheeler
Oakman, Wellington Daytcr nml
Charles Arling, in other roles in tho
rast, portray their rrtirts with tho aid
nnd support of nearly two dozen nui
inals, hears, wolves, fox, deer, moun
tain lions, raccoons, porcupines, goats
and others trained by experts.
Probably no picture production has
had u more unusual array of animal
talent. Cost of the animals was minor
In comparison to tho cost in timo nud
patience to iuduce them' to develop nn
affection or hatred toward the various
cabt members with whom they wcro
to work.
"Ev
n'Einr'VOMAN," the fcercen ver
sion of Walter Browne's stage
success, which scored n success at tho
Palace, lat week, holds for a second
week. Its appealing story is acted by
an all-stav cast and. its settings nre
of unusual magnificence. A new form
of decorative subtitle has been used
with striking effect.
Throughout tho picture modeled ti
tles, the work of Willie Hopkins, u
Scotch sculptor, noted for his "Mir
acles in Mud," popular oil thu screen
ii few years ago, are utilized. These
decorations nre allegorical figures, from
living models, and carry out the devel
opment of the story of Uvcrywoman's
nilgrlmago in quest of love.
It is Mr. Hopkins's belief that nr
tislic titles are nu es&cntial to tho
completeness of a picture. It is be
lieved that the innovation of sculptured
titles will soon become recognized
part of motion pictures.
ANOTHER well-known character of
fiction has been transposed to tho
ncrcen with the filming of Mary Miles
Minter in "Anne of Green Gables,"
which is next week's bill at the Arcadia.
Anne Shirley, heroine of L. M. Mont
gomery's four "Aune" books, has for
scars been one of the popular fiction
heroine of grown-ups as well us of
thr younger generation.
In adopting tho books for the screen,
Frances Marion, who has been identi
fied with many of Mary Pickford's suc
cesses, preserved the most interesting
situations, nnd Director William D.
Taylor was careful to choose locations
that tallied with descriptions in the
book. Mr. Taylor found an old house
at Dalham, Mass., built in 1G30, which
is almost identical with the description
of "Tho Houso of Green Gables."
IT WAS not enough for Allan Dwan,
producer of "Soldiers of Fortune,"
by Richard Harding Dayis, which will
be been at the Victoria nest week, to
know what the people of the novel wore
or the geographical location of the
story. How did Davis'R characters talk?
A story laid in South America, in a
certain province of n certain country.
mu&t bo filmed true to the place. "If
the shake of the head means 'yes' to the
natives and no word used, substitute
the motion of the word." &aid Dwan.
Ilow the people lived came in for its
full share of Dwnnsquc scrutiny. Were
they athletic? Did they have to fight
hard for an existence or was nature
bountiful?
The theatro-goer who casually ob
serves the film will scarcely guess what
'research' meant in connection with this
nroduction. And the little matter of
locations' that just unfold neatly for
the tpeclator on Ins liuntiy screens
After a fulilo search Dwan decided to
hunt for locations via the air route.
Accompanied by his associate, Arthur
Itosson, the trip was made, soaring
along the coast and over mountains
until suitable locations were sighted
and "clinched."

TOM MIX is coming, not only in what
is said to be his biggest production,
but in n role which is a distinct dV
parturo from pure "stunt stuff," in
"The Feud." at the Victoria, week of
February 0. Memories of the days of
crinolines and hoopskirts, of men who
wore their hair long and were quick on
the trigger, of pioneer days of romance,
arc coujured up in this new Fox fea
ture. FIVE versions of "The Stronger," by
Premier Clcmcnceau of Trance, have
been viewed by a jury at the projection
rooms ot vox rum corporation, which
means that nearly all the scenes in the
production were taken five times. The
jury decided wuicn, in its judgment,
conveyed tho thoughts of CIcmenceau
in his novel of politics nud a powerful
modern love story in the world, and
these scenes, titled, will be the version
of the only photodrama from the pen
of the "Tiger of France." It will bo
shown the motion-picture public in
Stanley Co. theatres later ou.

Reports from tho "West to the con

of abandoning the operatic static. Her
name is linked with "Carmen." In
London it wns said that Sjlva was "a
supreme incarnation of tho cigarette
girl." While in Paris she sane the
role for more than fceveu years at the
Opera Comique. In Berlin, before un-
fhappy days fell upon it, Sylvn and
Uaruso were the Carmen nnd Jose par
excellence.
Madame Sylva has temporarily quit
the operatic stage for the vaudeville
platform, and is to be the headline
feature of the bill at Keith's the com

here with success and her return en

Movie Frans Greet Alice Brady
A screen artist is making a good
attendance record, as crowds of movie
fans nightly go to the Lyric to see Alice
Brady in "Forever After." Tho fol
lowers of a picture actress are manv,
but the audiences that greet Miss Brady
at every performance have not come
merely to satisfy a curiosity ns to what
a silver sheet heroine looks like in the
flesh, but to be stirred by the histrionic
talents of the star in a play which seems
to have been constructed just for her.
