pushed it back to Kenneth.
"Address an envelope to the district

Thev went backward until their
shoulders were against the mabogauj

tomatic thrust into the front of his
trousers. More poignantly than ever
before he thought of Jennie, of the
torn end of his dreams and long plan-
Lning for her: aud iu his subconscious
mind were aiso inose tilings oi wmi-u
Doris Dorraine had told him things
which had wrecked other lives. All
that men had railed primitive, brutal,
immoral, surged up in him to a climai
ot furv all that was remorseless.
"Slim Jackson." he gritted, "you to

Slim luuecd swiftlj at him, but
.Terrv. on the alert, caught him in a
great hand that closed upon shirt
I front and coat lapels, at the same time
i covering Kenneth with his weapou.
I "I'd like to choke you. Slim Jack-
soiit" ,Terfy gritted on, "only I don't
waiit uuy linger marks ou jour throat.
You're n rat, damn you and you're
going to have a rut's finish !"
So swiftly that Slim could not ralsn
a warding hand. Jerry Dashed Slim's
automatic from Kenneth and preised
it iigainst SllmV right temple. There
was a sharp explosion and Slim Jack-,
sou slumped to the floor. The auto
matic fell beside him, and the ncU
Instant the second pistol it was Ken
neth's was hi Jcrrj 'h hand and wan
covering the shrinking Kenneth,
'Tor God's sake for tJod's sake
" gasped Kenneth.
But Jerry was at once upon him,
broke down the frantic, clawing handi,
aud thrust tbe automatic clnsu against
bis bead. There was uuother explo
sion, nud Kenneth Hnrrisou pitched to
tho floor.
Breathing mightily, Jerry examined
the two collapsed figures. Both were
quite dead. The trickling wounds weie
powder-burnt: that was as be bad de
sired. He moved each man's weapou
close to his right hand, and arose. He
felt no more of compunction than if
thcj'bad indred been what he had called
them rats In his mind they more
thnn deserved their end j and, besides,
their death and lis manner were , only
necessary details of n fir larger plan
which be hoped was coming out nil
right.
Here ho puused n mqnicut, his light"
ly-clad figure beaten tipou bj tho rain,
and tossed overboard tb6 pistol which
ha had brought along for uso In emer
gency, but which luckjljv he Lad, not
had to draw. Already 'he had for
gotten what had huppencd dawn in the
Mjra's cabin, and what lay there await
ing tho morrow's discovery. Ills eyes
and mind were directed into tho dark
southeast where stood the Tombs.
Ilia lips parted in n husky, broken
whisper: "Jennie! I hope it
works out all right, Jennie
Good'by!" v
lie let himself down into the gloomy
water; nnd upon tho bosom of tho sea
going tide, with easy, silent strokes
that had n tremendous reserve of
power, Black Jerry swam nvvay through
the dnrkuoss 0u,t into the
unknown.

REPLACE YOUR
worn-out
equipment
CAPITAL and Labor are getting together. The paralysis of production caused
by unrest and the unreasonable demands of radicals is rapidly coming to
an end. Machinery, the tool of production, unfortunately does not seem to be
as quickly available as is demanded by manufacturers in order to reach the peak
of production required by world conditions today. Deliveries of many lines of
imperatively needed machinery and apparatus are too long to satisfy the im
mediate nccessities of manufacturers. This emphasizes the importance of our
function, to make machinery immediately available.
In previous messages to manufacturers we em
phasized our service in furnishing equipment
for immediate delivery from war plants, much
of it new, some of it so little used as to be
practically new. We urge manufacturers to
get into immediate communication with us
whether in the market for additional equip
ment or contemplating changes in plants. The
-engineers and chemists of our organization arc
available to advise what can be done with your
idlemachineryortointerestothermanufacturers
to establish active industries in your locality.
SOME OF OUR SPECIAL OFFERINGS
