Fourth and lirruii Street's
. New orli, Jan. I!!). Today's mar
ket was n dull and featureless proles
I fctouol affair. The volume of business
jMiruuk to insignificant proportions, re
J uVrtinK in a measure the overpowering
influence of the money market condi
tions. Almost from the outset a dam
per was pnt ou speculative activity by
, the advance in the renewal rate of call
loans to 10 per ceut. which subsequent
ly wax raised to 14 per cent. There
could be only one interpretation, and
that was the unrelaxed determination of
i tlm powers-to-be to promptly arrest
j any effort looking to u broadening of
vpeeulativp activity.
I The -seemingly indifference manifest
, cd in the two preceding sessions to the
continued high money rates obviousl
I was more superficial thou real. It was
I evident, however, to close observers,
uuu leeiiniuiu. ruiuer mini uut-om.- ui
rliMons were the gocruing factors in
the supposedly rrerMil in the market
trend. In other words, when the more
urgent demands of the short interest
were supplied, the market was deprived
of its prinei'iiil buing power anil sup
port The truth of this was readily
confirmed in the mixed priced move
ment of today's sessiou. Yet the market
seemed to possess an undertone of con-
1 sideruble strength.
Comparatively little attention was
evideuth paid to outside developments.
1 This nt least was suggested in the semi
official statement from Washington that
no matter what Congress did or did not
do the railroads would be icturued to
their owners on March 1.- Vossibly on
of the reasons this ultimatum" wns passed
by was the fact that the bamc asser
tion was made by the administration last
December, when it became evident nec
essary legislation could not bo enacted in
time to turn the ronds over accord
ing to the program on the first of the
year.
Pressure ngainst oils was resumed
kooii after the first rally. Mexican
Petroleum, Uoyal Dutch, Sinclair and
Middle States displaying marked hcnvl
ness. The reaction also embraced vari
ous specialties, including Columbia
Graphophone, Famous Players and
Enilicott -Johnson.
Steels, coppers and food stocks parti
cipated moderately iu the setback with
low-priced rails.
Automobile shares pursued au inde
pendent sonrse, however, General Motors
rising briskly at noon.
This rally enrried Chandler, Stutz and
General Motors 3 to 7 points over yes
terdav's prices, steels nlso deriving sub
stantial benefit. Associated Drygoods
reacted on uews that dividend action
had been deferred, and the list developed
fresh reactionary tendencies, when call
money rose to 14 per cent.
Call loans duplicated the high rate
of the mouth at IS per cent in the final
hour, but the advance was without ma
terial effect, some of the motor shares
extended theirgains.

Evening Sun's clo-ing financial review

liusiness on the stock exchange could
scarcely have been duller than it was

'l'he White House and the railroad

The market merely drifted iu the last

NEW YORK COFFEE MARKET
New York, .Inn. 20. After the call
in the coffee market, trading continued
dull and price changes unimportant.
The market continues to drag along
awaiting inotc definite news regarding
the government sales of coffee.
Some trnders have expressed the be

March liquidation is over with, but the
volume of business is expected to be
light until general market conditions be
come more settled.
The local spot market this morning
was quiet and unchnnged.
