JUST GOSSIP ABOUT PEOPLE
Nancy Wynne Tells of the Many Plans for Next Season.
Domino Club to Play Tomorrow at Bellevue-,

mil ERE seems to be a lot of criticism
X about the debutantes of next year
choosing their dates bo far nhcad. In
fct I hare said to myself, why on
artli do they decide now? But what
do you think I learned yesterday?
Mr dears, a woman I. know after
hearing that several dates had already
been spoken of, went to n certain hotel
to engage the ballroom for n night next
rear for a charity entertainment. And
j0 you know that every night for a
whole year, of course excepting the
dimmer" months, is booked until Feb
ruary. 1021 ! Imagine it! So one catl't
blame peoplo for arranging' their par
ties to far ahead If that is tho case.

I HAVE frequently told you about the
splendid work that the Wayne branch
of the Red Cross did during the war.
Now that the war is over they arc not
active, but have not-disbanded, and the
executive board meets once in u while.
Such a meeting was held in the Satur
day Club of Wayne last week, and
after said mcctine the board surprised
(he chairman, Mrs. Henry Brooks; with
a luncheon as a little token of appre
ciation of the work she did for the or
fanization and her fine co-operation in
the activities "of the other members-
Mrs. Rolliu II. Wilbur read a poem
which she had written for tho occasion,
and a most uniaue testimonial was nre-
tented to Mrs. Brooks, consisting of a
leather-bound book in a mahogany case.
The book was u history of the work
done by the Wayne branch of tho Red
Cross during tuo war. Wasn't that n
lonely idea?
Among those who attended the lunch
eon were Mrs. Charles Custis Harrison,
Mr?. C. Howard Clark. Mr. Wilbur,
Mrs. Robert Brodhcad, Mrs. G. A.
Shoemaker, Mrs. nobcrt Dornan, Mrs.
Allen Barr, Mm. John S. O. Harvey,
Mrs. William. A. Nichols. Mrs. Fred
erick C. Embick. Mrs. W. H. Stone,
Mrs. Louis J. Palmer, Mrs. Grafton
Wilson. Mrs. William V. Alexander,
Mrs, Matthew Randall and Miss Grace
Hoberts.
TT WAS most interesting .yesterday
afternoon at the Art Alliance. Tou
know John Drew was tho guest of
honor nnd positively every one wan
there. A little Biirprisc for the guests
and guest of honor, too. for that mat
ter, was sprung by Mrs. Otis Skinner,
who. looking perfectly charming, as she
always does, made a delightful little
. speech making Mr. Drew an honorary
: member of tho Art Alliance. Aud that
means somethine. you know. Only
those who are considered to have at
tained the perfection of their art are
aiven this honor, and there must be a
unanimous vote therefor by the commit
tees II is needless to snv that the
vote for Mr. Dicw yns unanimous. The
other honorary member of the Alliance
is Miss Cecilia Beaux, the artist.
SHE was talking earnestly to one of
her bestcst friends, and wondered
why said friend lauehed eleefiillv when
she finished her remnrks. She was
laying: "I think you and Carrie S. are
very much alike. I've noticed it more
of late, too." Then, pointing to a pic
ture of Carrie, she continued: "Now
this oieture of her reminds me of you.
I like it though," she concluded.

FURS AND
Sixth Article of a Copyrighted Series.
- A lady recently looked at a fur coat in the store of a
certain furrier and considered that his price for the gar
ment was too high; a few days later she visited another
store, finding' a coat of the same fur and which looked iden
tically like the coat shoivn her by the other furrier.
She had almost decided to take the coat at the lower
price, but, out of curiosity, she decided to ascertain if pos
tible why there ivas such a vast difference in price on these
two coats appearing to her to be identical.
Possibly you have met with tlie same experience, so
we'll tell you what she found: The first coat was made
from whole skins, while the second and cheaper coat was
but a collection of small pieces or odds and ends of the same
kind of fur, pieced together, the density of the fur hiding
the cheaper skins used in the piecing.
Needless to say, she bought the higher priced coat,
which was far cheaper in the end.
This is by no means an unusual occurrence, for a clever
furrier, willing to deceive his patrons for the sake of long
profits, by cutting the skins into strips and piecing them
together with sheepskin or some other cheaper hide, can
turn out a garment as good looking as the garment made
from whole skins.
The lining and padding of such pieces aid the dis
honest furrier in his deception, but if you will grasp :7je
garment firmly and rub it slowly between the hands, the
many seams can readily be felt.
This only proves that furs, like diamonds, should be
bought from a dealer whose reputation for reliability makes
trickery impossible.
