Neither lu individual performance nor
in ensemble was last evening's presenta
tion of "Rigolctto" by tho Bfetropolitau
Opera Co. particularly impressive. In
fact, In spite of the beauty and intense
dramntic expression ot the music, there
were comparatively few "high snots.
One of these, however, was thd per
formance of the quartet in the Inst act,
which was the best balanced and tiucbt
sung number of the entire opera.
It must be said, however, that nt
least two important members of the
cust were not by any hieaus in their
best voice. These were BIr. dc Lucu,
who was evidently suffering from a
severe cold, which deprived his voice of
Ihe greater part of its usual resonance,
and Miss Garrison, who. while her voice
thowed no traces of cold, did not last
evening have Mifhcicut volume to com
pete 'with the Richard Straussiau effects
which BIr. Bloranzoni was constant!
evoking from the orchestra.
BIr. Hackett, the Duke, was in tho
best vocal form of any of tho piincipnl
members of the cast. He was especially
good in the upper register of his oici'
and did some fincsinging in the "Questa
o quelin," the duct with Gildu in tho
hccoud act, the opening aria of the third
act, "Parmi vedcr le Lugrinm," and, of
course, the always melodious and popu
lar "La Donna e Blobilc."
Miss Garrison, aside from not bciug
in the best shape vocally, made a
charming Gilda. Her stage presence
was. as always, most attractive and she
displayed her usual fine sense, of rhythm,
in which important adjunct bhe is sec
ond to no singer on the operatic stage.
'BIr. de Luca acted the title purt well,
although its character is not especially
well adapted to his unquestioned his
trionic gifts.
Bliss Perini made nn attractive and
coquettish Bladdalenn nnd m. nilfniintn
vocally to the comparatively email, port
allotted to her, but BIr. Blartlno was!
omy moderately successful. bothvp,ealIy
