Chicago, .Inn. 17. Building onfia

wholesale business concerns repot t a
persistent volume of buying way ahead

which there are complaints of slow
business.
All through the West building opera
tions arc going ahead as fast as run
plies ran be obtained. The labor sit
nation is also a factor in thin respect
as in some cases it is difficult to secuie
the number ot men wanted. In the
steel plants production is slowly in
creasing, more men going back to work.
Ihc last week on the official scttlemnit
of the strike. It will be some time
before the steel mills have a norma
supply of labor, however, as man.i of
tho workers hnve drifted into otlu-.
Hues. Demands for structural stetl arc
heavy, and there have been ronie bi;
orders placed for rails nsjvell the last
week.
Coal movement is apparently fail
ample for requirements, ns little com
plaint is heard. Tbe roads are having
all the building materials tonnage of
fercd they cnn handle, and every when
the demand is for more cars. A good
indication of the sound conditions in
the West also is the mail-order busi
ness, which is considerably larger Ibau
for the barne time last year.
