Two Performers Say Claque
Gets Money for Starting
Applauso
Chicago, Jan. 13. (By A. P.)
Rlngeri of the Chicago Grand Opera
Co. have been pnylng for applaune at the
rate of from .$50 a week to 520 a per
formance, according to fitatcments of
Charles Fontaine, French tenor, and
Alesandro Dolcl, Italian tenor, made
public today.
An assistant stage manager, the ten
ors said, was head of the claque, and
obtained the money under promises of
"handclaps, cries of 'bravo. ' 'encore,'
'bis " or threats to "cut off their nr
tlstlc heads."
Herbert Johnson, comptroller of the
company, said he had heard rumors
that "somebody v,as shaking down" the
artists, nnd that n circular letter was
sent to the singers last month advising
them it was unnecessary to pay for ap
plause. Fontaine said the claque leader told
the npplnuders, whom he stationed
about tho theatre, what singers to ap
plaud, when to start n demonstration
and what nri.is to make the singers re
peat so that the artist's reception would
appear "wildlv enthusiastic."
Dole! said he defied the claque after
cleofonte Companinl. former director
general, now dead, told him not to heed
demands for money or the threats. Poloi
declnred Campanlnl said he had been
giving the man named as claque leader
twcnty-fie tickets for friends of the
chorus or persons who helped with odd
jobs.

Play.
Etitcnc O'Brien is a perfect Indies'
man, nud his admirers among the femi
nine contingent will find much to like In
his new rolo. His romantic character
at once gains for him the sentimental
sympathy of his audience.
As an artist, n role he played in a
former piece, the hero finds he is living
next door to a singer in the popular,
although now rich, Greenwich Village.
All goes as smooth as care-free love can
go until a patroness of the artist sug
gests that he go to Paris nnd study fur
ther into the ways of the use of a camel
hair brush and pigments. The girl
continues with her vocal v.ork. But it
soon comes to each of the separated
friends that their melody of, love has
been broken, and so they join each
other and form the perfect harmony so
necessary in sentimental romnnees.
The I'Teellenee of the Stanley orches
tra helped out this story. Lucy Cottop.
vUiosc recent work on tho screen has
gained for her a number of friends, hasi
the role of the singer, while Donald

ARCADIA "Wanted A Husband." with
Illllle Burke. Story by Samuel Hopkins
Adams, directed by Larenco C. Wlndom.
Paramount play.
Billie Burke is a tutc little bunch of
femininity, but she mitt hac nt least
some good matcrinl if her daintiness is
to count. In this piny she first appears
as u careless lady who docs not mind
what her two girl friends t-av nbouther
appearances. Then comes the marring?
of these girls, and of course the heroine
of this story must get herself a beau
and a husband. It is cusy to inient
such n person. Soon n miiu appeals,
nnd he proves that he lenlly does love
her for herself, and the storj has its
happy ending.
The little star Toms rather careless
in thK talc, but perhnpi it was the fault
of the entire production, for it seemed
to lnck the usual sparkle found in the
Burke comedies. Kid Blond, nn .ithktc,
