An audienre that filled the Shubcrt Theatre to tho doors was present last evening to hear the second of the or rbcstral concerts of tho Philharmonic 'Society under the leadership of Henry Gordon Thunder. The oreheotra, ns be fore was made up of members of the Philadelphia Orehestra. nnd they brought to the performance under Mr. Thunder that perfection of rhthm and tone for which tho body Is famous. The orchestral number'! were all fine music but Aere not too nostrum for the cuy comprehension of a general audience, nnd were well received. They begun With the always popular "William Tell" overture, followed by two movements of; the Second Symphony of I'rethoven, the first and the beautiful larghetto. one of the finest slow movements of Heel hoven's early period. Then came the j'eer Gynt uilo of tines, n number long neglected nt more nmblttous con certs, but one well worth being oftener played aud tho program closed with Tsehaikow sky's Mnrchc Slave. Following tho policy of tlio society, there were two soloists, both 1'hiladeJ phinus, Kmily Stokes Hiigar, soprano, and Clarence K. Uawdcrt, pianist, the latter appearing in n composition of his own, a ballade for piano nnd orches tra. Sirs. Hagar sang two operatic numbers. "(311 angiit d'Inferuo." from the Magic Flute, nnd "Je suis Titnnia" from Jlignon. She did both well, but wai the better in the more modern work than in the difficult simplicity of the Mozart number. Her voice is pleas -lug fn quality tttid she has an excellent technique, with good control nnd enun ciation. She was recalled nnd sang a short hong for an encore, both with or cheslra. Mr. TJawden's Ballade has been played before at the orchestral concert of the Manuscript Society, and is an ex cellent work. Tt is quite elaborately worked out, both for tho solo instru ment nnd fcr tho orchestra, and he has taken full advuntage of the wealth of color in the modern orchestra. The scoring at times is somewhat heavy, there being places in which the solo part is nearly obscured. Mr. Bawden is a fine pianist, and both the composi tion and the manner of its performance warranted the enthusiasm of the audience. RICH QUARTET IN A FINE PROGRAM Appears Before Chamber Music Association in Works of Dehn- anyi, Mozart and Halvorsen The IUoh Quartet furnished the pro gram at the fifth, meeting of the Cham ber Music Association nl the Bcllcvuo Stratford yesterday afternoon. Owing to unprcvcntahlo circumstances, there have been some changes in the personnel of the qunrtet, Ilnrry Alclntkoff, sec ond violin, nnd Samuel Bclov, viola, being the new members. , Tho program begau with the quartet in U-tlat by Dohuanyi, a somewhat pretentious composition In form nnd style, but without many of tho essential ingredients of a really tine quartet. The work is modern enough for the length and tho manner in which they are treated. The quartet was well played and was equally well received by the large audience. The other quartet waB the lovely E-llat of Mozart, which, musically and in workmanship, was everything that the Dohnnnyi wns not. WILLIAM MANN COMPANY 529 MARKET STREET PHILADELPHIA, PA. New York Offices: 261 Broadway. Founded in 1848. rVKRUSEMEVr U EKTISKMKXT Quality is a small word, but it holds, or should hold a prominent place in the vocabulary of those who do the buying for the household. ' The question the shopper should ask himself or herself when con- ' tcmplating: a purchase is not "How much?" but "How good?" You ' will find the problem of securing articles of the best quality greatly simplified if you do your buying in the Chestnut Street Shops. JUST the other day I heard s-onie one express a longing for "one of those wonderful grandfather clocks," adding, however, that they were too tall for her bungalow. She was dehtrhted when I told her that Bailev, Banks & Biddle Compan.x have clock of this type designed especially for bungalows and rooms with low ceilings. They are a most attractive addition to the furnishing of a room, being particularly in har mony with furniture of the colonial type. They are made in various stylet and of course the fact that thev bear the name of Bailey, Bank &, Biddle Company is sufficient guar anty of the quality of their rame ments,. Their musical chimes an deliehtful leminders of their prec ence. A hall clock makes a delight ful wedding gift. A CHEERY log-fire blazing away on the hearth adds much to the joy of living. Even the smallest suburban houses being built nowadays boast of at least one open fireplace where family and friends gather round to pop corn, toast marshmallows and swap stories. The well-ordered fireplace ha3 its accessories, simple or elaborate, to harmonize with the furnishings of the room. Those of .wrought iron are especially desirable, for, although nuite simple in form they are sturdy and quite capable of holding the heavy logs. J. Franklin Miller, I 1612 Chestnut street, has some very good-looking andirons of wrought ' iron, ana nrepiace sets, consisting or tongs, shovel, poker and hearth brush to match, and your wood basket may be cf .willow or wi ought iron. ANEW and tempting confection which I discovered the other day at the store of Yahn & McDonnell, 1508 Chestnut street, is of marshmallow, covered with de llciously flavored jelly, then coated with that glistening sugar which re minds one of snow that glitters in the sunlight on a December day. Hard candies in iars looked most in teresting, too. They are all made at 1508 Chestnut street, of the very best of ingredients, bo you can be uro they are wholesome. These jars make delightful gifts for children, and a jar at each place at a party given for the kiddies would earn for their hostess an enviable reputation for beneficence. I must put in a good word, too, foi the Yahn & McDonnell tea-room. The dishes served there nro most dainty and appetizing. HAVE you ever rcen anything quite so lovely as those large Chinese baskets, filled with 1 fruit at the store of Henry It. Hallo well & Son, Broad street below Chestnut? The baskets are hand made, very finely woven and hand painted in vivid colors, the designs being characteristically Chinese NO MATTER how many times I visit the store of, Frank J. , , Curry, 812 Chestnut street. I , tmd something new and interesting , to wnte about. This week it is the , stationery department. I was ac tually surprised myself, to discovei I the amount of work that they do in thi- line. The department is devoted entirely to social stationery and is . quipped to handle engraving for wedding invitations, dinner and dance invitations, etc. The work, like all work which you intrust to I Curry's,, i3 well done and the papr used is of excellent quality. I noted too, that Currv '& now have their full line of birthday cards on displav and I do think that they have some of the most interesting and attrac tive birthday cards that I have ever ' seen anywhere. THERE is a delightfully restful atmosphere about the Steinway Ware- rooms at 1111 Chestnut street, and when they invite you to drop in nnd listen to your favorite selections on the New Edison phonograph they really mean what the.v saw "Every one greets ou with a smile, and ou feel just us if you were attending a reception where every one present was very glad to meet you," :u a friend of mine who had accepted the invitation expressed it tho other day. Good prices for the farmers' crops encourage new investment, more production and greater prosperity. But the success of agriculture depends on the growl-h of railroads the modern beasts of burden I hat haul the crops to the world's markets. The railroads like the farms increase their output and cut down unit costs by the constant investment of new capital. With fair, prices for the work they do, the railroads arc able to attract new capital for expanding their facilities. Rates high enough to yield a fair return will insure railroad growth, and prevent costly traffic congestion whicli invariably results in poorer service at higher cost. National wealth can increase only as our rail roads grow. Poor railroad service is dear at any price. No growing country can long pay the price of inadequate transportation facilities. xJlib advertisement id. puhli&lxed by the r?r ark -----!- . fisssaggiggtiasaffiafla ' ' " i imii ii, ,, , safsmmmmts DEASY Jan. 11, MARY M.. daughter of John and Mary Oeacy, Relatives and friends, St. Elizabetha B.
