which was entirely logical In view of
the ultra professional caliber of the
current speculation. While price move
meiit was extremely irregular the mar
ket retained an undertone of decided
itreneth besides developing significant
resiliency.
Some disappointment was expressed
in the failurfc to contitmc the upward
swing which started in the later part
of Inst week, more especially In view
of the week-end dcvelppnieuts which
were favorably interpreted by the lead
ing financial Interests. Indirect in
fluences, however, contributed to create
caution and invite realization of profits
d.v mosc wno liau the temerity to buy
during the weaker periods last week.
More potent in this connection was
o ratio of res.cn cs reported by the
Federal Reserve Bank, which seem
ingly foreshadowed a further contrac
tion of credits. Then there was the
uncertainty respecting decisions which J
expected to hand down today.
Possibly the more direct motive behind
the uusettled surface appearance of the
market was to be found in the technical
conditions. There is little doubt but
(hat the substantial recover uunetnent
las week was made largely at the ex
pense of the over-extended short inter
est. With th larger proportion of this
element forced to cover, the market was
correspondingly deprived of this buing
power and would be expected to yild
under its own weight.
The opcuing reflected considerable
accumulation of out-of-town buying
orders over Sunday. This demand was
soon supplied and before the cud of
the first fifteen minutes of the trading
decided reactionary symptoms developed
In all parts of the list. Moderate sell
ing prebsurc effaced most of the initial
gains within the first hour. The re
actiounry party apparently plucked up
some courage when the market showed
evidence of ielding and made nu active
hunt for soft spots nnd stop orders.
Reactions of one to four points accom
panied the freer offerings of leading
steels, equipment, oils, motors, ship
plug shares and such specialties as
American AVoolen. Allied shares made
corresponding decline", but the metal
aud rubber shares were relatively firm.
The call money renewal rate was
fixed at 10 per cent, the lowest initial
rate in several weeks. This upset the
predictions of nuotber money" squeeze
and was followed by a noticeable
steadying of prices nil around the room.
Another active "clling movement fol
lowed the decision of the Supreme
Court upholding wartime prohibition,
although the stocks most affected were
not directly involved in the decree.
Steels, oils, shippings nnd liigh-prlccd
sieeinltics extended their earl losses
by 1 to 4 points.
Leaders strcnglhrud for a time in the
later dealings when call money declined
to G per cent, but reacted again at the
end.

prices. Trading was animated througn

pressure exerted on the selling side.
